Four years at UCLA or UCSD? I know UCLA is ranked higher and is more prestigous but I like to surf and UCSD is right at the beach!

Don't pay attention to the rankings. If you like a school more, go there.

I have two friends who are turning down top tier UCs (UC Berkeley and UCLA) for UCSD. It's definitely not a bad idea to go to UCSD over UCLA.

UCLA is only 4 miles from the beach, and there is a bus that goes there from Westwood.

I don't know how the surfing in Santa Monica & Malibu compares to the surfing at Torrey Pines and Black's Beach in La Jolla, so if that is the deciding factor in where you want to attend college, you might try asking at a surfing website. :)

i agree with ucla band mom...
i dont think place to surf is a good reason to turn one down over another...unless you plan to do it everyday and are into it religiously......which i dont think you are...

It's a pain to go to "surfable" (is that a word?) beaches from Westwood with all the LA traffic and parking issues. SD is definitely a better city for you if you really want to surf regularly.

hey man, Im a UCSD student that turned down UCLA last year. I did it for personal reasons, nothing like surfing, but go visit both schools if you havnt already. Once you visit a campus, you can decide easier, and also consider academics and school specifics, UCLA has sports and busy westwood and a long ass history, UCSD is still a growing school but more about academics, the kids here are more into academics than UCLA, consider these things also. What major are you applying as?
