UCLA vs UMich Double major Math + CS

I intend to double major in math and CS in college; I am having a difficult time choosing between UMich and UCLA for this.
At UCLA I have been admitted to the College of Letters and Science for Pre-mathematics, and at UMich to LSA. I have been comparing these colleges on the basis of several factors including social life, housing, climate, food and so on. However, I am having difficulty comparing them on the most important criteria: academics. Further, I have NOT been able to determine how difficult it is to be approved by the engineering department at UCLA to take up CS as a double major. Are there any stats for this?

Any help in making a choice between these two would be of great help! Thanks.

We are comparing the two schools as well. Tough decision. I think I would call admissions and ask about the Engineering major. That may make your mind up for you.

You can switch majors to engineering and then add a second major in math. You cannot major in math and add CS as a second major. Engineering must be your first. Both UM and UCLA are very similar. Great academics, great social life and athletics. Only difference is weather.

@10s4life So how difficult will it be for me to be approved to switch to CS as a freshman?

@erdoswiles You’ll need a 3.7 ish across two quarters of engineering coursework. Plus you’ll need to take cs31-33 which will Be after spring quarter. It’s doable but hard. The average engineering gpa is a 2.77

Thanks @10s4life !

Actually, to switch to CS will take you at least a year, since you must take CS 31, 32, and 33 and they are a sequence. You have to have a 3.5 GPA in the major prep, which includes math and physics in addition to the 3 CS classes I mentioned above.

The School of Engineering holds change of major workshops every week during the school year to answer your questions.

In the fall, you should take Math 31A (or a higher course if you have AP credit), CS 31 (if you can get in), and a GE.

Thanks @alicantekid. It certainly seems like a tough deal!

@alicantekid Is it a 3.5 for CS now? In the winter my counselor said a 3.7 was needed for CS

It’s always been 3.5
