Ucla vs UMich

OOS for both so money isn't really an issue (even though it is since it's mad expensive for both).

What is a better school in your opinion?

goin' for Chemistry, Pre-dentistry

Thanks

have you been to both states/schools?

Go where you feel the most comfortable and you’ll do well. personally, I would choose LA between the two for the weather but that’s just me. if you enjoy warm weather year round, even in winter, come here. the beaches are great too.

there’s a lot of things to do here in LA and lots of opportunity to get involved. you can get to MANY places by bus and if you or a friend have a car, its amazing how much there is to do around here. not to mention there’s a lot of cute girls here. (no, not every girl is a valley girl/plastic/superficial/random stereotype before anyone suggests that)

At the end of the day, you’re going to be going to a college 4 years so I feel its important to go somewhere that can give you a college
experience. Unfortunately I can’t comment on Michigan but I love UCLA and don’t regret my decision one bit. I’m sure you’ll hear the same on the Michigan board.

good luck

Thanks gatos. I’ve been accepted to both. I was also wondering if you believe Ucla has grade deflation.

ucla is a tough school academically, I’ll admit but from my experiences if you work hard A’s are very doable. I don’t think UCLA has grade deflation.

If anything, CAL is famous for its grade deflation. unfortunately, public schools in general are not able to have inflated grades like many privates.

But as I’ve learned from experience in college and the advice of others when I was deciding schools, you have to be happy wherever you go and enjoy the environment. if you’re happy, the passion will follow and you’ll put in the effort.

Both UCLA and Michigan are grade deflated. Almost all public universities have deflated GPAs.

UCLA is slightly more deflated than Michigan, though. Here are the average GPA comparisons.

UCLA - 3.22
Michigan - 3.27

[National Trends in Grade Inflation, American Colleges and Universities](http://gradeinflation.com/)

^the source for the UCLA gpa is
" Faculty Senate document
2005-2008 Greek life academic reports"

I don’t think the Greek life academic reports is representative of UCLA. That, and the fact that CAL has higher average gpa than ucla and UCI’s is 2.98 on that site… makes me a little skeptical.

The thing is, its tough to gauge overall gpa since there are huge discrepancies between majors.
For example, the sciences and engineering are known for having lower gpas than the humanities at many schools.

But like I said, it comes with going to a public school. obviously ucla is deflated if you compare it to the privates. At the end of the day, you still have to work hard regardless of what school you go to.

^Well you don’t know what exactly is on the report.

It could easily say something like
“Average UCLA GPA: 3.22
Average Greek GPA: 3.00”

I have been to UCLA and UMich many times. They are pretty different schools. Spend as much time as you can at each school to see which one is a better fit for you. If you are not from a harsh winter area, make sure you consider that factor also.

@sentimentGX4: true, neither of us do but that does not make it any more credible IMO. I agree to disagree here.

What I’m trying to get at though is that college is much more than just your GPA. Sure, if you wanted to relax in college, why not go to a Cal state or an easier UC? What UCLA has over these schools is the resources and opportunity to pursue what you want to do. You can get the “definitive” college experience here and still have great academics.

Internationally, a lot of people recognize UCLA as one of the top schools in the US. Not so much Michigan.

^^^Complete and total bunk. We’re talking about Michigan here, not just some average state university. Even excellent publics like UVA and UNC don’t have Michigan’s international cache. UCLA and Michigan are both pretty equal in this regard, with a slight edge to UCLA in Asia and an edge to Michigan in Europe.

From what i’ve been hearing, Michigan is better in the east coast, whereas UCLA is better in the west coast. Saying you’re from UCLA in NY might not mean as much, similar as saying your from michigan in california.

The university, from what i’ve heard now on many occasions, with the most in international prestige is berkeley. My bro was telling me that when he was in france, some dude from sciences po (a university i hadn’t heard of at the time) marveled at the fact that he got his degree from berkeley.

michigan might have a slightly higher edge than UCLA, but if it does, in terms of an actual university, it isn’t by much. However, under public prestige east of california, michigan is a bigger name in places like texas, florida, new york, michigan (lol)

@rjkofnovi

Nope. I’m an Asian applicant who’s currently living in Europe. UCLA easily beats Michigan in terms of international recognition. EASILY.

I never said Michigan sucked or anything. UCLA is just really well know. even people who don’t know Princeton, Dartmouth or Penn have heard of UCLA. Not Michigan though.

Irrelevant unless the OP plans to live and work abroad. The whole “Chinese know more about one than the other” is completely overblown. Anyone worth working for will have done their homework and realize that both Michigan and UCLA are among the nation’s premier universities.

OP: I was also admitted to both a few years ago, and ultimately chose UCLA because the people were so engaged in activity and conversation when I visited, and were incredibly friendly. You’d be surprised how big of a difference that can make to your college career. If you think you’d like to live and work on the West Coast, UCLA gets the prime market out here.

Ultimately, I’d visit both and decide. They have very different feels to them, and go with whichever feels right. Best of luck.

GO TO UMICH…you will have a higher chance of getting good grades…15% get As for Bio at ucla which is freakin hard…u mess up once and ure screwed…ure a chem major…and CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT is probably one of the most HATED departments by students at ucla (and with good reason)

the quarter system means u constantly have to be on ur feet and provides for less of a college experience

UCLA is very veryy expensive for OOS…and they are cutting back on classes soo much…im a sci major and can feel the impact

in terms of oppurtunities both have d-schools, so they will be the same oppurtun at both

go to Umich…u’ll get a higher gpa and have much more life

sci kids at ucla are hella weird…just sayin

@nose2Dgrind

I was talking specifically to the poster who talked about international recognition of the two schools. I was just making the point that in Asia (especially Korea, the place I’m from), and Europe (especially two countries I’ve lived in), UCLA is recognized much widely.

I never mentioned anything about UCLA being better than Michigan as a school, or suggested that OP choose UCLA over Michigan because of this.

fwiw, stayed in imperial college & cambr. last summer for a relative’s sabbatical; whenever anyone asked me where I was going, they instantly replied ‘woah, Big M’. Most of the time my cousin got “oh, so it’s like berkeley”.

just curious, what two countries were those?

I asked my roommate from india and he says that people have heard of UCLA, CMU, Harvard, Yale, but no one’s heard of michigan or berkeley. I keep hearing inconsistent views from people, so it has to vary by country which university is the biggest.

i keep breaking my own rule: don’t underestimate UCLA

‘The World Reputation Rankings, a subsidiary of the overall World University Rankings, are based on the largest global survey of academic opinion ever undertaken: more than 13,000 experienced academics from 131 countries give their expert insight’

in these rankings, michigan was #13, UCLA was #12 out of reputation. So they’re pretty much negligibly close. I wouldn’t doubt if in some countries michigan was better than UCLA, and vice versa.

[Top Universities by Reputation 2011](http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2010-2011/reputation-rankings.html)

^I would like to point out that ARWU, the most respected source of world rankings, ranks UCLA higher than Michigan, however.

UCLA - #13
Michigan - #22

Of course, the QS rankings, former collaborator with THES, ranks Michigan significantly higher than UCLA (but the QS rankings aren’t that well regarded, especially after the split with THES).

UCLA - #35
Michigan - #15

Overall, I’d say UCLA edges out Michigan in world rankings, though, because the rankings are generally regarded in the order of
ARWU > THES >>>>>> QS

P.S. HEEACT, a ranking source of research paper productivity, also regards UCLA slightly better than Michigan.

UCLA - #5
Michigan - #8
