UCLA vs UNC Enginnering

If you got admitted to both schools of Engineering- UCLA chemical and UNC Biomedical -which would you attend and why without any form of aid or scholarship?

and now UCB CE

Berkeley is probably the strongest academically (mature department, highly recognized research). I suggest visiting each campus to see if there are other factors (e.g. surrounding city, dorms, campus buildings) that might end up being important to you.

I believe all are public institutions, so in-state residents pay less. Do you hail from either state?

Location is important: UCLA and Berkeley are on the west coast whereas UNC is like in the south.

I’d rather go to UCLA.

International and can’t visit until I choose and that would be too late. Full tuition to pay in all three. Being considered for leadership scholarship at UCB. The cost of a visit is not in the budget. Please I need honest unbiased opinion. These are the final three.

You may want to consider weather. Berkeley is a lot colder, whereas Los Angeles boasts a healthy amount of sunshine year-round (I can’t comment about North Carolina). I’ll repeat what grapesoda said about Berkeley probably being the strongest academically, but you can’t go wrong with any of these three top institutions. If Berkeley offers you a decent scholarship, then that may push you towards that. Just do some research about the campus cultures. Berkeley tends to be liberal and people like smoking things.

I have no problem with the weather cos I have lived in both extremes and UCB is what I would consider average. I pray that the scholarship comes through as that would really tilt things to UCB. It will be a sad way to let go of UCLA though. UNC is a lot cheaper than both UC schools but they offered BME which is not a first choice. As to smoking and other stuff, all three would have the same if that is the road one chooses.

I think UCB is the strongest academically but UCLA is definitely comparable, and strong all around (academics, people, weather, location, etc.). I might be a bit biased because I’m a Bruin and because it fits me better but this is also what I’ve read/heard a lot - if you’re academic focused then Cal, but if you want a more diverse college experience then UCLA. If UCB is average weather to you then UCLA will be AMAZING weather. Just going to put this out there that many of my friends have gone to the beach or the Getty museum to study on weekends, even in the middle of winter…

Also, if you’re sad to let UCLA go then I’m going to say that’s where your heart lies, seems a little bit like you’re only choosing UCB because it would seem like the “right” choice? But definitely wait to hear about that scholarship I suppose.

I concur but with the fees close to $55,000/year, I want the best.

As you posted on the UCLA forum, so people would and should prefer UCLA to UCB or UNC. I think it really depends on your major. Look up their departments’ website and see what you can find. If you are a student who is going to major in engineering, UCB should be first choice. If you are majoring in apply-math or some liberal arts and media majors, of course UCLA.
