UCla vs UNC (no scholarship) vs Clemson (substantial scholarship) -- D is from S Cali

I have greatly enjoyed reading these posts, because I am also deciding between Clemson and UNC. I would love to hear where your daughter ended up and how she is liking her first year! I am from the south and love the laid back environment of Clemson. I am accepted to both, and the tuition is about the same because i recieved an in-state scholarship for Clemson. Any advice for me as i make this important decision??

For d, it was between UNC and UCLA/ Clemson was too small for her, and she turned it down in spite of the very nice schlarship she was offered.

If you hve gotten accepted to both and the cost is the same, I would advise UNC bc it is bigger, offers more majors/opportunities and has more name recognition.

How did you like UNC.

For both, attend a couple of classes and talk to the dept or a teacher in your intended major. Are you interested in studying abroad or internships? How many students are in the major you plan to major in?

Drive around the campus and see the surounding area. Clemson is much smaller and UNC bigger. D decided she needed a bigger city rather than a small city.

In the end, UCLA was a good fit for D -- she loves it there and got a 3.7 her first quarter.

Thank you for your reply!
i am really glad your daughter found such a good fit. The small surrounding town of Clemson does not bother me, and i have visited both schools. my brother is a freshman at clemson and absolutely loves it. both schools have good departments in my major, but i am concerned that unc doesn't start classes in your major until junior year, and it is a seperate applying process to apply to these departments.

Aside from the surrounding areas, how did you think the feel of the campuses compared, including the people and environment??

the people of clemson were friendly, helpful. I liked the campus of unc better--more to do, it seemed like the organizations, cubs etc of unc had more to chose from.

One person at clemson --a teacher, i think-- when we told her of my daughters choices thought it would be unwise to attnd clemson even with the schlarship d got. However I think you might be able to be a "bigger" fish in a small pond at clemson and may get more personalized attn.

OK ladies my D goes to Clemson-engineering-so I cannot speak to history/prelaw, however
1 Clemson is not a big party as some are inferring- you can drink or not -no pressure
2 There are sororities & frats but it is not necessary to be in one, especially for a girl-always welcome to any social event!
3 People at CU are FRIENDLY and it is SAFE, not to mention beautiful
4 Being in a small town keeps students attention on studies/extracurriculars-(not the mall)
5 Atlanta is 1 hr away, Greenville is 1hr away (both have malls!) so does Anderson 20 min away. Clemson townspeople LOVE the students & welcome them to their businesses, churches etc. When in Clemson stay at the James F. Martin Inn (CU runs it) eat dinner at Calhoun Corners or Pixie & Bills. Yes it is rural but it is warm & welcoming & everyone loves it. UNC is also nice but they take only 18% from out of NC -per mission stmt they admit/help NC students first! Out of staters are a serious minority there.
