UCLA vs USC vs UMich engineering

rank these schools in terms of their engineering program
and also in terms of engineering school admit rates

Bump

Which USC are you talking about?
I assume you mean Southern California. The admission rate from high to low should be UMich, USC, UCLA while the difference is not that big (around 16 to 25%). However, the admission stat of the 3 schools are very similar. A lower admission rate does not necessarily means you have a lower chance. It may just indicates more students to apply (e.g. due to popularity) or less admitted students (due to capacity of the school or yield rate). Very often it is due to the self-selectivity of the applicants.
School rankings vary depending on your criteria. In general, I would rate UMich>UCLA>USC although there is no consensus. It is more important for the ranking of specific program anyway.
Anyway, this site would be useful for you:
http://profiles.asee.org/profiles/6237/screen/19?school_name=University+of+California%2C+Los+Angeles

Of those schools only USC is private, and it’s smaller. I went to USC and Michigan Law and both Michigan and UCLA are huge. If that’s what you’re looking for then don’t go to Southern Cal. All three have great engineering schools. Check out the admissions stats, USC’s admission rate is, in fact, the lowest of the three, so if you get into USC, congratulations.

mattmass, this is a difficult question - rank them based on what end career goal? Do you want to be an engineer or get an engineering degree for grad/mba/law? I studied engineering before grad school and worked as an engineer, so it really varies depending on what you want to do with your degree.

Also, what type of engineering? It will vary wildly depending on what area you want to pursue as not all engineering sub-disciplines are created equal even at top schools.

In terms of pure engineering snob rankings from an ex-engineer’s standpoint, it would be:

Michigan >>> USC/UCLA

In terms of quality of undergrad education, I would rank it:

USC > Michigan > UCLA

Hit me up if you have more focused/specific engineering questions.

So I’m not 100% decided but I think I will want to be a software engineer, and I also think I want to get my masters in that also. Would that change anything?

You’d be fine at any of those three schools. Engineering has such a common cirriculum (Engineering programs at all of those schools are ABET accredited) - employers generally won’t really care overall where you went to, unless you are seeking to be hired by a company that is known to recruit from X university. UMich though, is slightly more of a respected program but if that would be the sole reason to go there, I wouldn’t do that.

Also, I myself have tried to find USC info on Viterbi’s acceptance rate to no avail. They may not publish such information

Chance of admission, UMichigan>USC>UCLA
Quality of Program, UMichigan> than either USC or UCLA. It depends on the sub engineering field.
