Hi, i'm an international applicant from the Philippines. Until now, i've got accepted to UCLA, UMich and UIUC and I'm just waiting for USC decision. I was just wondering which college would best fit me. I was thinking of going to UCLA, cuz i like Cali weather, but i started to hear about the financial crisis at UCLA and it cutting classes. After all, I really dont care about things other than the weather, reputation and tuition. Also sadly, im not getting any scholarship from those schools, so i was just wondering what are your opinions on these schools? btw im thinking of minoring in IR.

UIUC is highly rated for CS but closed behind it are Michigan and UCLA. Michigan has the best overall rep amongst the schools in your list but UCLA is very close behind. If you’re not used to cold weather, you’re not going to like Michigan and UIUC. UCLA is in LA and LA has an almost perfect weather all year round.

I’m curious why you didn’t consider UC Berkeley, Stanford and Caltech?

I couldn’t apply to those colleges with my around 2000 SAT score haha. i’ve applied to Carnegie for ED and got rejected=( btw which one has the biggest student body size? Also i just want to know about the rumor of UCLA cutting classes due to its lack of fund.

I would go to UCLA

… that I could find:

USC
U 16,751 G 18,073 Total 34,824 (2009)

UCLA
U 26,162 G 13,431 Total 39,593 (2010, Includes ~ 1500 Interns & Residents in G and Total)

U Michigan
U 27,027 G 14894 Total 41,927 (2010)

UIUC
U 31,252 G 10,697 Total 41,949 (2010)

The three publics are probably overenrolled because of the echo baby-boomers, eg, UCLA s/b ~ 23-24K undergrad.

Class Cuts? UCLA cut some classes in 2009. They might have starting this academic year. Hopefully if they did, it would be the “fluff” non-important classes.

The main question is would you be able to get all your classes? Major classes, s/b no prob. GE? That’s a good question. Maybe someone else can answer.

Being that you’re from the Phillipines, sounds like you wouldn’t like CA weather. Go to UIUC or UM. Good luck…

You’re just kidding, right?

i just liked Cali weather when i’ve visited SF area during summer vacation, so i was wanting to go to UCLA, but again financial crisis thingy is my only concern. Can anyone in UCLA comment on this plz

UCLA all the way!

USC or UCLA…I would pick USC.

All four of them have very good Computer Science programs. If it were me, I would select one of them based on other factors.

I’m with spurster. All those schools have equally good reputations (UIUC less so overall, though it’s computer science department is very strong and maybe the best ranked out of those listed). You should look at factors like cost and fit. All will give you a great education and great opportunities.

all four are similar

go with the fit and where you want to spend the next four years of your life

I know UCLA and USC gets heavily recruited by top tier firms on the west coast looking for programmers.
