So right now my choices have been narrowed down to usc and ucla.. Ucla for computer science, and usc for finance major. which one should i do?? usc's so freakin expensive, but its school for business is world-renowned. compsci isnt really prestigious at ucla there either, but i'd be going cuz ive always wanted to go there..any suggestions??

What’s wrong with CS at UCLA? I don’t think I’ve ever seen it ranked out of the top 15. It’s certainly a well regarded program.

Anyways, I can’t tell you whether you should do finance at USC or CS at UCLA.

What do you actually want to do? These majors have nothing to do with each other.

USC.
I hate LA and would never want to live there, but if I had to go to school in LA, I’d go to USC. Campus is easily one of the most beautiful places I have ever been in my life. Plus, their mascot is cooler, and it’s a private so I’m assuming class sizes are much smaller than that of UCLA and you will get a more personalized education.
But this is, of course, just my humble opinion
Both are great academically but I’d pick USC any day over UCLA.

Those are completely different majors…

Anyway, I would personally choose UCLA because it’s in a safer/nicer area and UCLA would be $80,000 cheaper after 4 years (assuming you got no FA.)

USC is in a working-class neighborhood with real people and a great attitude of community outreach. Campus and the surrounding blocks are very safe, and I have never felt uneasy walking around there, even at night.

USC is very generous with their financial aid. The UC system (and the state of California) is having a budget crisis.

But first, you should decide what you actually want to do.

I’m definitely not an unbiased source as many of my relatives attended UCLA and I grew up hearing “USC. University of Southern California? No. University of Spoiled Children.” Hahaha…I know USC’s a great school and lots of kids at my high school would jump at the chance to attend but I personally would choose UCLA over USC any day, for these reasons (beyond familial connection):

UCLA’s campus is directly across from the main entrance to Bel-Air, which tells you quite a bit about the area. The campus itself is gorgeous, encompassed by awesome running trails, and boasts some pretty incredible architecture (Royce Hall, for example, is absolutely stunning). The tuition is also significantly less than what you’d be paying if you decided to attend USC; however, (to present the opposite view), it is entirely possible that because the UC’s are currently experiencing a financial crisis, the tuition will continue to increase. I know you stated your interest in pursuing computer science while at UCLA, but since you are interested in becoming a finance major if you decide to attend USC, I would like to point out that UCLA also has an excellent Econ department, if that is something that you are considering.

USC’s campus is gorgeous in parts, yes, but it is also located in what many deem the “not-so-nice side of town.” While my sister was home on a break from college, she decided to visit her friend who attends USC and was surprised by just how unappealing the area just off of campus truly is. She said that on-campus is fine and rather lovely, but “you know immediately when you’ve left the campus, and it’s not due to posted signage.” Hmm…take that for what you will. USC is a good school but I think that UCLA’s location is much more desirable.

Good luck as you make your final decision! :)
