UCLA vs. USC ???

Hi!
I'm moving to LA in about 5 months and still havn't decided which school I'll attend.. I've heard that USC is more a "party school", but UCLA has a better location and a richer sorority life.
I've a meeting with my counselor tomorrow, but please give me some advice!
Thanks!

I’d go to UCLA. This is based on only the smallest knowledge of both schools.

UCLA is higher ranked, if that’s important to you.

actually, UCLA is # 25 this year on US News, whereas USC moved to # 23.

just saying :)

[National University Rankings | Top National Universities | US News Best Colleges](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/page+3)

university of souf central

Haha okay I revise my post…USC is higher ranked if that’s important to you:)

If USC’s cost wont be a burden, or if the costs of the two are pretty much equal after financial aid, opt for USC.

Thank you guys! But what about the life around campus; sports, sororities, parties, students, etc. Which one got the best school spirit? :)

Ucla!!!

USC all the way!

from someone who’s actually very familiar with both schools (although admittedly biased) this is what i’ll tell you:

sports: both are big at both schools, although i should note that USC has some notorious NCAA violations :stuck_out_tongue:

sororities: frat life is technically bigger at USC (20% of students) vs UCLA (10% students) but i should note that since UCLA has way more undergraduates than USC, it doesn’t end up being that big of a deal.

parties: i think USC parties a bit harder than UCLA does purely because they have more time to do so (USC has 16 week semesters; UCLA has 10 week quarters)

students: USC has more “bro” type people on their campus; at least on two or three occasions while on campus i’ve come into contact with at least a few people who were very drunk. I’ve never seen that happen at UCLA (and i basically live on campus)

Which one got the best school spirit?: i’d say both schools are pretty equal on school spirit.

Even if you would like both schools, i think you’d like USC a tad bit more. It has a bit more of the frat/party culture you seem to be into, and with the longer semesters, you’ll have it at a much higher frequency than at UCLA. This doesn’t mean that UCLA doesn’t have its share of parties as well, all that it means is that you might go to an amazing party, and then have to spend the next day studying very difficultly for the homework you slacked off on.

It’s also probably worth considering what your future plans are. USC generally has a stronger professional focus; UCLA is more academic. If you’re looking at things like film, business or engineering, USC is strong, but the departments in UCLA’s College of Letters and Science tend to be much stronger than their counterparts at USC.

I personally would choose USC if cost wasn’t an issue. But it would be a tough choice.

Agreed USC is awesome. Though UCLA is a fine choice as well.

I personally would choose UCLA if cost wasn’t an issue. It would be an easy choice.

Whichever one is cheaper. If that isnt an issue then I’d go with USC since it is more diverse (UCLA is like 90% asian, 9% white, and 1% ‘other’).

UCLA is 40% Asian, 30% white, 15% Hispanic, and 15% other. Go to USC if you don’t mind getting shot when you step off campus. UCLA is a much more classier and reputable school. Oh and “A Trojan lasts for the night, buy a BRUIN lasts forever”

For me, it’d come down to tuition.

From what I know from visiting both campuses and knowing lots of undergrads from both schools, USC is more of a party school, both campuses have a lot of school spirit, USC has a smaller student body size, UCLA has a better campus (it’s gorgeous, and located in Westwood - USC’s campus doesn’t even compare). UCLA is a public school, remember, and it’s the largest UC. The campus is large, and the number of undergrads is huge. I’m not sure if this is necessarily true, but some programs at UC schools are impacted because of the recession. And as is the case with many public schools, class sizes are very large, and it’s sometimes hard to get into certain classes because they fill up.

Both are great, and it’ll definitely be a tough choice. If money’s not an issue for you, it seems like USC might be a better fit.

My tour guide said UCLA was the smallest campus of all the UC’s. But that’s not saying much, because most of the UCs are huge :p

I’d talk with whomever is going to be helping pay the bills for your U before you pin your hopes on either U. If you’re a resident of CA, UCLA can be MUCH cheaper than USC, depending on whether you qualify for need or merit aid.

Both schools are quite competitive, so do your best so you’ll have options and acceptances to choose among.

Your major can also affect which U is more appropriate for you. Do you have any idea what you’ll be majoring in?

Safety/danger of USC is greatly overrated. Both our kids have attended USC & not felt endangered. S has already graduated from there & D is a rising SR.
