Which one? UCLA is so well regarded in general, but Plan II is one of the best honors programs in the nation (except I don't know how well it's known outside of Texas), so I cant decide which is better academically - the main deciding factor. I'm in-state for UT, so tuition is significantly cheaper which is great, but if I want to go to UCLA, my family can afford it. LA and Austin are both wonderful cities, too... HELP?!

In my eyes this is an easy decision. UCLA is not worth OOS tuition. The only reason the UC system is admitting more OOS students is for the money they bring. I see little additional benefit of attending UCLA over Austin. They are two large publics with all that implies in terms of large class size, lack of personal attention, et cetera. and the education you get is going to be what you make of it. At either school.

On the other hand, if your parents decide to spend the extra money to send you to UCLA then on behalf of the California taxpayers I thank them for their gift.

UT Plan II and don’t look back. You have a great IS option.

OP- do you live in Austin? Is this why you hesitate? Because living in Austin is unlike anywhere else in Texas. If you want to get an OSS experience then UCLA may be worth it to you. On the other hand, if you don’t already live in Austin, you are in for a treat.

Know of several kids in Plan II and they love, love it. Some were from Austin and others from other places in Texas. You are correct though that the Plan II part of it seems to throw some people off- they don’t know what it means until it is explained.

Visit both campuses and cities.
