I believe all his classmates that put in the effort were all able to find a valuable internship. That ‘effort’ includes having done work outside of classes on personal projects. That is likely a key for freshman year internships.
In my son’s case, he received multiple offers from companies that came to specifically make a presentation to Turing students. Although the offer he accepted for Freshman year did not come through a Turing specific presentation, ‘Turing’ was well known to the hiring manager and likely helped.
