UCLA vs UVA for Engineering?

I'm out of state for both schools and my parents are capable of paying the tuition to some extent at both schools. At UVa my parents have to pay about 17,000 a year and at UCLA my parents have to pay about 32,000 a year. Like I said before my parents are able to pay for both schools but obviously UCLA's tuition will be more demanding on my parents' income but it's manageable. Now my question is, is the extra money really worth it if I'm going to study engineering? UCLA's engineering is ranked higher than that of UVa's on US news but in all honesty will I be significantly more prepared for the engineering world if I attend UCLA? Will I have better job and internship opportunities at UCLA? Will I be able to get good grades at UCLA and get into a good graduate school? I just don't want to make a bad decision and regret it. Personally, I really want to go to UCLA for many reasons for which I will not name and also it has been my dream school for quite a while; however, UVa is also a great school in and of itself but just not the same at UCLA. So basically I don't really want other factors to affect my decision; I want to make the most intelligent choice therefore I want to let the academic difference between the school be the deciding factor. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I don’t think UCLA Engineering is $60,000 better than UVa Engineering. I would save the money and go with UVa.

Thanks for the input Alexandre.

I was also accepted at U Mich and I know you went there and had a great time and learned a lot from the school. Do you think Mich is worth 42,000 a year. I’m sure my parents can pay for it but it will be tough on them. I know its engineering school is among the very best. I really like U Mich as well. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

If your parents are willing to pay then go to UCLA, especially if you hope to live and work in California after graduation.

So if I plan to find a job and work in California, then UCLA is definitely the school to go to? Is an engineering degree from UCLA highly respected in California? Also, I have always been wondering how important it is for an engineer to get a masters degree or a phd degree? Do most employers expect prospective employees to have at least on of those degrees as well? Or is it more important to have work experience?

Certainly it’s easier to find a job in California if you go to school in California. You’ll have an easier time finding internship opportunities in California, recruiters will come to campus, etc. etc. UCB is more highly respected that UCLA, I believe, but UCLA is very well respected in California. Certainly a master’s degree is better, but you don’t need to worry about that now.

There’s a big tech industry in Virginia. If you go to UVa, you’re likely to find a job there. There’s a big tech industry in California. If you go to UCLA, you’re likely to find a job there. It’s just common sense.

Umich is worth $42,000/year…but NOT when you have UVa for $17,000. Go to UVa!
