I have recently gotten into UW and UCLA for Presciences ( To neurobiology ) and Biopsychology respectively. I have not been awarded any financial aid in UCLA as yet and UW financial awards are not out yet.
I am trying to choose one.
As far as I know:
UCLA:
Better ranked for my course and as a college overall
Better weather in California
UW:
Better labs and hence tougher to actually get neurobiology.
Have family there.
In Seattle, so lots of industrial companies.
For someone who wants to choose a college and get a job in maybe heath sector or such, which would be better?
Congratulations! Two great choices! I don’t think there’s a significant difference in the reputations of the two schools. I’m not familiar with the specific programs, but they are in strong areas for both schools. Hard work, taking advantage of opportunities, creating opportunities, treating everyone with dignity and respect . . . doing all of these things will be much more important than any small differences in reputations.
Yes, better weather in SoCal. Better choice if you like the SoCal lifestyle. UW is close to a great downtown area (by light rail) and lots of outdoorsy things to do. It sounds like you are a direct admit to a very competitive program. It is a great place to find jobs and internships, perhaps with less local competition than CA. That’s great.
Unless there is something specific about one of the programs that appeals, this is a decision I’d make based on community and lifestyle. Where would you rather be?
Good luck!
UCLA has an international reputation and is the highest ranked public university in the country (along with Berkeley). UW does not and is not. That said, if you are a WA resident go to UW. If you are a CA resident go to UCLA. The differences in in state vs out of state tuition are just too great to ignore, if all else is similar in your mind.
Thanks @TTG and @KTJordan78 for your inputs!
