<p>Just wanted to get a general opinion on this. I'm in-state for VATech and OOS for UCLA. Is the considerable difference in OOS tuition for UCLA worth it when compared to instate tuition for VAtech?</p>
<p>Not for engineering or most majors I can think of.</p>
<p>For any STEM major no it’s not even close to worth it.</p>
<p>If this was like 10k difference then it would be worth it but the price difference is so big that Virginia Tech instate wins.</p>
<p>Last year, when my kid was applying to colleges, my wife and I, after much deliberation, agreed we would pay to send our kid to UCLA (OOS), rather than University of Florida (in-state).</p>
<p>In the end, though, our son chose a third option.</p>
<p>The point is that while we knew that it was no doubt foolish to spend $50,000 at UCLA compared to almost zero at UF, we still, in the end, agreed that we were willing to send him to UCLA. And believe me, we don’t have that kind of money.</p>
<p>When you have a kid, you want the very best for your kid. At least, that is how I feel.</p>
<p>Even to the point of being reckless.</p>
<p>Of course, every family must make its own decision in this regards, and almost every family of a smart kid is faced with this decision, or a similar dilemma.</p>
<p>Mothers in China dream about sending their kid to UCLA.</p>
<p>Definitely Virginia Tech - no thought needed.</p>
<p>If an Engineering major I’d probably pick VT even if costs were close.</p>

<p>Asians tend to be way too brand name influenced. Who cares what such Chinese striver moms think for no good reason?? Just because UCLA Tshirts are coveted in China?? Dumb reason to do anything that expensive.</p>

Not at all, IMHO. UCLA is a great deal for in-state students, but for the OOS price you could get something much better. And I’m hardly a UCLA basher; look at the sticky at the top of the UCLA forum.</p>
<p>Around here a VT grad would get hired before a UCLA grad (everything else being equal) because we’re closer to VT and employers are familiar with the school.</p>
<p>Even when we lived in FL there was no problem getting hired (as an engineer working in the field) from VT.</p>
<p>I suspect Chinese mothers might prefer UCLA (IF true) because it is closer and more familiar to them - not because they know the difference in the programs.</p>
<p>I say UCLA. Virginia Tech is haunted.</p>
<p>Depends on what you want. Management Engineering and the such should be UCLA. Hardcore engineering like electrical, computer and mechanical should be V.Tech.</p>
<p>In your situation, I would go for V.Tech because I would then have money to get a masters from a really elite school like MIT or Stanford, but a lot of people get rejected by UCLA, in fact it has the most applications in the world, so look back to the first paragraph for help and remember having an extra 50k in savings will go far for you</p>
