do we even have a chance at getting off the waitlist in-state?
Supposedly, they do not rank waitlist candidates but will re-review each application once they know how many spots they have to offer. Emphasis on the “supposedly” here
@WaitingforGodot4 - makes sense. I think I’m really screwed: I’m instate and applied for L&S, so my chances are minimal. Or well, at least I got accepted to Cal…
i’m OOS white female, math major, 9 AP classes (mostly 5’s and a few 4’s) along w 5 more AP classes senior year, 35 act, nmf, lots of ec’s such as math research internship at KU, club and varsity soccer four years, multiple jobs, 500+ community service hours. really hoping to get in. do i have a greater chance of getting off waitlist due to the fact the other students at my school accepted to ucla are
not attending?
I guess- let’s wait and see. Meanwhile, just curious- what other options do you guys have? Where do you plan to SIR?
I’m currently debating between UC Berkeley (Regent Candidate), Emory (Scholar) and USC (no scholarship). What about you?
no acceptances so far (stanford (lol), unc, usc, ucla) and waiting to hear from berkeley, brown, and duke so fingers crossed. congrats on usc though- i definitely had my hopes up for that one!!
as of now my first choice is USC, although its super expensive, but I’m also considering Northeastern cuz they gave me a lot of money (and @soccerbunny423 i hope you hear good news soon!!)
oh woah UC berkeley regent. thats amazing. whats your first choice
@kokotran I don’t know if I will get Regents at Cal - should find out on Friday (fingers crossed!!!) but at least I know that I’m admitted.
USC will probably not be an option- can’t justify the cost given the other choices.
Sounds like everyone has some really great options! Got rejected from USC, which felt like a real low blow. Accepted at Northwestern, which is a terrific school but just way too close to home for me. Also accepted at LMU, Occidental, and Chapman, but I’m not passionate about any of those tbh. Really hoping I get off the waitlist because it breaks my heart not to be able to officially enroll at UCLA or USC on May 1st
@emmawonz what was your major?
200-400 students being admitted off the waitlist must mean an even smaller number of spots available, right? Since many of the students waitlisted and then admitted will decline, having grown comfortable with another school even if UCLA was initially their top choice.
nevermind, saw it in an older post!
@collegefind1234 Where did you see numbers for 2014? UCLA reports admissions data on their website, but I wasn’t able to find any numbers for their waitlist and I scanned the past five years.
Berkeley’s common data set indicates that waitlisted students have a pretty good chance of being admitted; in 2016 more than 30% of waitlisted students were offered admission. I know those numbers don’t necessarily have any correlation to UCLA’s, but I’d love to see the data.
@textbooked UCLA has a very different statistics compared to Cal. I’ll try to find a link with numbers and will post it
@textbooked here’s some Waitlist statistics. I understand it varies from year to year but you get some prospective

@textbooked Cal can’t be used to compare to Ucla. UC Davis and cal are known to use the waitlist to control yield rates. Ucla has it pretty locked down to where we rarely need to use the waitlist. Our classes normally fill give or take a few spots with regular admits.
@collegefind1234 Thank you!! This is incredibly helpful. I wonder why this info isn’t posted on the website. I don’t see a downside to sharing the info.
@10s4life You’re right that there is a big difference between schools. Big difference between years too.
@premiereprokid yep I put undeclared social science, only because you can’t become a communications major until your junior year at UCLA. Open to changing that around though since I would love to minor/double major in theatre or TV/Film Production. What about you?
@10s4life Thank you for all of your helpful info, it has been a lifesaver . My son was waitlisted for Engineering at UCLA but accepted at USC. Given what you’ve said about the wait list and about impacted majors, should he even bother opting in? It is his number one pick but he has almost made his peace with not getting in…
