Water World Gives UCLA Number 99

Goal with One Second Left Beats USC, Wins Title

Now, this is the way to beat USC: in the national championship game, on a (literally) last second shot. The UCLA women’s water polo team couldn’t have scripted their second straight title any better, beating back the challenge of their crosstown rival, 9-8, at the Schaal Aquatics Center in Davis, California.

Coming barely a week after the Bruin men’s volleyball team roared to a title, the women’s latest triumph elevated UCLA’s total number of team championships to 99, more than any school in NCAA history and one shy of an unprecedented century mark in championships.

Courtney Mathewson fired a five-meter shot into the goal with one second remaining in the game to give coach Adam Krikorian his fifth women’s water polo title and his eighth championship as coach of men’s and women’s combined.

And who will notch the magical 100th title? Heading into postseason play, it’s likely to be one of the following ranked Bruin squads: number one-ranked softball, second-ranked women’s golf, men’s golf (ranked #5), men’s tennis (#10) or women’s track and field (#10).

Sweet! Go Bruins! :D

It is truly unbelievable that UCLA has won 99 championships... seriously, one more and its a 100, which is way ahead of any other school.

1. UCLA (99)

2. Stanford (92)

3. USC (84)

4. Oklahoma State (47)

100 will be coming soon.
