Water World Gives UCLA Number 99

Goal with One Second Left Beats USC, Wins Title

Now, this is the way to beat USC: in the national championship game, on a (literally) last second shot. The UCLA womens water polo team couldnt have scripted their second straight title any better, beating back the challenge of their crosstown rival, 9-8, at the Schaal Aquatics Center in Davis, California.

Coming barely a week after the Bruin mens volleyball team roared to a title, the womens latest triumph elevated UCLAs total number of team championships to 99, more than any school in NCAA history and one shy of an unprecedented century mark in championships.

Courtney Mathewson fired a five-meter shot into the goal with one second remaining in the game to give coach Adam Krikorian his fifth womens water polo title and his eighth championship as coach of mens and womens combined.

And who will notch the magical 100th title? Heading into postseason play, its likely to be one of the following ranked Bruin squads: number one-ranked softball, second-ranked womens golf, mens golf (ranked #5), mens tennis (#10) or womens track and field (#10).
