UConn for Computer Science

Does Uconn have a good CS program?

Are you instate? If so it is a good affordable option. The CS program is. not good enough to justify OOS costs. IMO

UMass Amherst has a really strong CS program.

@Mastadon Yes but if he is instate for Conn he should go to UConn. Instate for Mass go to UMass Amherst which O think is a little better but not worth the extra money if you’re not rich.

@gearmom UMass Amherst has a very strong CS department and is a leader in AI - which is the hottest subfield.
UConn is fine, but I would pay (a reasonable amount) more for UMass if my child were looking to land a job on the leading edge of the field. I would certainly apply to UMass if I lived in Conn and wanted to go into CS.

@Mastadon That’s a good point if you can afford. Especially AI. I do think UMass excels in CS.

@gearmom much to the chagrin of in-staters, UMass offers merit aid for highly qualified out-of-staters (to get more revenue). I don’t know if they do it for CS, but I think it is worth throwing in an application and evaluating the cost/benefit tradeoff if and when you get accepted.

@Mastadon When DS applied for CE ( which I understand is not CS) he received the max scholarship of 12k bringing his yearly total down to 32k. Our instate option with merit was 22k. So a 10k difference for us. As it was explained in the Boston Globe, UMass needs OOS $ to educate instate students. Not everyone gets the max merit scholarship. Some OOS might even be paying full freight $46k I guess. Probably not many though.

@gearmom - by “CE” do you mean Civil Engineering or Computer Engineering?

@Mastadon Sorry Computer Engineering but I’m pretty sure the max merit given to any OOS is 12k.

@gearmom I have heard of some cases where students do not get in-state merit but get out of state merit for UMass.
Depending on the state, the difference can be smaller than $10K/yr.

@Mastadon That is true and UMass is tops for CS. So worth an app but I’d recommend sending it in by Nov. 1st.
