I was admitted into UConn Honors EA, I was wondering if anyone who currently is in the program or knows about it could tell me more. I'm trying to make some decisions.
Is it worth it to go into it? and are the benefits worth it?
Is it a lot more work?
If it is worth it to go into the program, should I accept housing in the Honors Residential Community or choose to take regular housing?

I'm not in it but know tons of people in it. They let you sign up for classes earlier and getter better picks for housing. Other then that its pretty much the same everything. They also sometimes have smaller classes, but with much harder work. But if you are a honors frosh i recommend shipee, since you will get to know your peers that way. Other then that if you do want to go to UCONN it is worth it for the housing and classes you get to have first pick of.

I am a Freshman at UConn in the Honors Program and think its a great program. As an honors student, you can take honors classes (which arent really a lot more work, just different style of teaching, different types of projects). Honors classes are generally quite small and a great way to meet other people in the program, people who you will most likely be living with in Shippee. They are usually more challenging than regular classes and the professors expect more of you as an honors student.
As far as dorms go, Shippee is a great option for freshman. Nowhere else on campus do freshman have the possibility of getting their own private bathroom. By the end of the year, you really do know most of the people in your dorm.
Feel free to contact me if you have any more specific questions about the honors program. :)

Sorry to bump this year-old thread, but I have a few questions/concerns of my own...

I'm probably attending UConn this fall and I made it into the Honors college. From what I hear, Shippee is a great place to dorm, but it's far away from everything. Are people there isolated from the rest of the campus and the other students? Is the honors college basically a tiny little school within the university itself? I'd love to take part in the Honors program but I still want to have friends from other dorms, go to parties, and basically just be connected to the rest of the school...is this possible?

Shippee is great. I'm a freshman in the honors program and I live there now. It is actually very close (within 5 min) to the buildings where most freshman classes are taught. There are also a ton of places to eat (Starbucks, Friendly's, chinese food, pizza places) within 3 minutes of Shippee. I would not at all say that I feel isolated living in Shippee. Half of my friends live on the other side of campus. It's really easy visiting them since there are buses that go directly from Shippee to other dorms.

There is a slight stigma about being in honors and living in Shippee. Some people I met here think that the only people in Shippee are geeks and social rejects (which isn't true). But once you show these people that you are not the stereotypical "shippee kid", you will be fine.

I'm not in shippee but I do go over there often enough. While certainly a bit more geeky/nerdy than most of the campus (this is to be expected), I've found the shippee kids to be among the crazier ones (note: not "psychotic" crazy, rather, in terms of having interesting personalities/having fun and stuff).

I was admitted to UConn but not honors. What dorms would you recommend? Can you get into classes or ado they close out? Are there a lot of foreign professors that are hard to understand?
