UCONN or UGA? REALLY need help!!

Alright, so right now I'm deciding between the University of Connecticut and the University of Georgia.

It's always been my dream to get out of the state of CT, but coming from a middle class family, I'm not so sure it's worth it at all. I got my estimated financial aid award from UGA, and it was pretty bad. I got $3000 in work-study, $2500 or so in one of those federal loans, and no grants or anything.

UGA costs roughly 24,000 a year for OOS students. Throw in airfare from CT (where I live) to Atlanta or Athens AND other expenses associated with traveling to college such as storage and buying more brand-new things, the estimated UGA cost would be around 22,500 when you figure in work-study.

UCONN, on the other hand, would cost about $16,500 for in-state students such as myself. Add in an $1,800 or so workstudy and a grant most likely that's 2,000 (a friend of mine makes around the same as my parents, and UCONN gave him 2K in non-merit grants), and the total is roughly $12,700

UCONN is the clear choice here, correct? It's been a school on the rise as of late, and the state recently invested over 2 billion in them. Over the past four years getting into UCONN has become ALOT more difficult. I've been to the campus once before and it's absolutely AMAZING. Nearly EVERY single one of their buildings are state-of-the-art, and I liked the housing options as well. .

I was really happy to get into UGA and all, but is it worth it or am I fooling myself? UGA would cost nearly 10K more a YEAR, which adds up to 40K total. 40K + interest adding up while I'm studying, and that's a crapload of money. Plus, I want to go to law school which is extremely expensive as well.

BTW, my inteded major is probably Political Science with a minor in something like English, History, or ECon.

So, What Would Jesus Do? I appreciate ALL the help! Thanks!!

Also...

UCONN- USNWR #68 university. #28 public university
UGA- USNWR- #58 university. #19 public university

bump...................

Take USNWR and shove it. Law schools dont care about 10 places off in an overly biased rank chart anyways.

This is a grass is greener on the other side of the state line thing! As a UConn grad and a parent of an 18 yo -- you are fooling yourself. I was recently on campus -- the place is amazing.

Once upon a time, I was accepted at UConn, UMass, and UNH (for pre-vet animal science). When I did my overnight visits -- the kids were very vocal about "why here? we all want to go to UConn."

Especially if you want law school later, save your pennies, go to our state flagship university and do well!

Good luck.

A public school is a public school is a public school

reputations rarely exist with publics, with the exception of "ivy publics" like UVA, UNC Chapel Hill, UMich, UT (texas), etc.

go with the cheaper, my friend...plus, you seem to like UConn! If it's "AMAZING," why not? It might even be beneficial to be close to home. You are lucky to have such a great in-state option available to you. Be glad you don't live in Mississippi.

I am going to UConn and pay only $400 in tuition for the year! I know alot of top students who got into Boston College, and ivy league schools, that chose UConn because it was so cheap. Is Georgia a better school? Probably or probably not. Is it worth several thousand dollars more? def. not. It is not worth getting loans people!!!! If you go to a top private you will graduate with a ton more in loans!!! Will you get a better job? Probably. It depends not on the schools reputation, but instead on your own performance. Say you get a better job that pays $5k to 10k more out of college coming from an ivy. You have loans to pay off that accumulate to say $50k+ (conservative figure). If you go to UConn chances are you will have no loans, and could put your hard earned money towards paying for a good law school. The smart decision is UConn. Also believe it or not, employers are now starting to look at how smart you were in your college decision. They see that if you went to a public school, you may be better in terms of allocating money, and using your money efficiently. This is not proven fully, but I do know some employers who do take that into consideration when looking to recruit.

definitely uconn, especially if you plan on living/working in the northeast after graduation

Thanks guys, I appreciate the responses. I'm most probably headed for UCONN considering it's the only school I've sent a deposit into (I sent the $150 acceptance fee the day I got in), I just wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing here. Hopefully UCONN's reputation can evenutally spread. I know they brag about being the #1 public school in New England. Hopefully that eventually becomes the NORTHEAST!

Rutgers and PSU are both ahead of us, but not by too much. PSU is #48 in the US, and Rutgers is #60.

The state of connecticut's goal is to make UCONN a top 10 public school. It seems like a bit of a reach, but you never know. If anyone has the money for it, it's CT.
