I am currently a senior in highschool living in NJ and I have been accepted to many schools but I have narrowed down my options to Ohio State, UConn, and Fordham. I am an undecided major in Fisher (Ohio) and an undecided major at UConn…I plan to major in finance or accounting. I am a first generation Hispanic student so I have no connections in terms of the business world outside and I have a high priority on job success after graduation. I’m having issues between deciding colleges. In terms of Uconn, it’s closer to home than Ohio State, and I got a good scholarship there. Ohio State, which is what i’m leaning towards but I am hesitant atm, sounds like a unique experience and great place to bet at. and has great potential for job success. (Tuition is not a problem, as my parents don’t mind at all how much they have to pay). In terms of Fordham if I so choose I can get off the waitlist, meaning I must to attend. however I am not the biggest fan of living in NY. My goal is to get the most out of college that sets me up with a good job. In terms of job success, as a first generation student what should I go with? (Ps. I am going for a Bachelors)
My ds20 got in to both Fordham and UConn. We are in state for UConn, and he loved it from his first visit jr year, but ultimately decided to go to UMass Amherst. Fordham was just too much $ and not enough aid for us, but he really liked it as well. The business schools at all 3 are very competitive, so be prepared to have to work to get in if you are not a direct admit.
I don’t think you can go wrong, but they are 3 pretty different schools. If you don’t like NYC, crossing Fordham off seems like a good way to start? From there, you have one rural school of about 20k, big basketball (both women’s and men’s) and strong academics with northeast/New England vibe, vs. much bigger, small city, big football, Midwest. You didn’t say where you are from, but does one appeal more than the other in terms of either feelings familiar or wanting a different experience?
I appreciate your response. I’m from NJ. I only visited Uconn and not Ohio State. When I visited UConn I didn’t mind the school at all, it’s just that it’s in the middle of nowhere. From researching extensively on Ohio State it didn’t seem to bad and for the most part I sense more potential there if that makes sense. Part of me too is also hesitant because although I don’t love living in NY, I sense NY jobs could be great…
UConn is for sure in the middle of nowhere. And Hartford isn’t anything like Boston or New York. If you want a little bit more of an urban feel without the full NYC experience, tOSU sounds like the right balance. Lots of luck!
