I was accepted into UCONN, as well as some other much smaller, private universities in New England that are much more money (around $15,000-20,000 more). Although I would consider the private schools I got into good schools, they are not "elite."
Has anyone dealt with a similar decision? Is UCONN the right choice for the money?
Any input would help.

Is that $15,000-$20,000 per year? Either way, I don’t think it’s worth it. Unless you got into Harvard or the like, I say UConn. It is a very reputable school and great for the price. Personally, I got into Boston University, my “dream” school but it would’ve cost me $7,000 more per year. $28,000 more to go to BU, IMO, is ridiculous. UConn offers a great education at a great price.

Good luck with your decision.

Thank you for your input. Yes about $15,000 more per year.
Did you attend/currently attend UCONN?

What is your prospective major? What would you like to do as a career?

I am not sure however, I am leaning towards business or marketing.

What are the private schools?

No, I’m a senior in high school who just made the decision to attend UConn after thinking long and hard about my choices. Also, who would be paying for you? In my case, my parents are only willing to pay $5,000 a year. Going to a pricey private school was out of the question for me. However, if my parents were well-off and/or able to pay for me, I would attend BU in a heart beat.

If you are not sure, they why pay 15k more for a general education? You can always transfer.

does anyone here currently go to UCONN?

Same thing happened to me! I still haven’t decided on a college, but my top 4 were UConn, Alabama, Ole Miss, and Fairfield. Fairfield only gave me around $3,000 in a scholarship and $3,000 in loans. It costs so much more than my other schools, so I eliminated it from my choices. I really like Fairfield but I don’t think it’s worth it :(

It would depend on the private schools, I’d say. I know people that have loved going to UConn and thrived there, and there are people (like my sister who paid the extra money to go to a private college, Cornell). Then again, she would not have been paying full price for UConn, which made it a really hard decision for her.
Therefore, I’d say it matters whether or not you are getting any money for UConn or are paying full price. It also matters if you’re in-state (which makes it a MUCH better deal than out-of-state).
Finally, I have to say that for engineering, at least, she knows people that are doing well in similar majors at UConn, but are not required to take as much math as she is at Cornell. So, I would say that UConn may be easier (it depends on the PSs you got into) so that you could thrive even more for less money. I consider it a win-win, because UConn DOES have a decent name (maybe not consideted to be the equivalent of so-called “elite” colleges, but decent).

I’m sorry if this note somewhat rambled (it’s a bit late/early for me), but good luck in your decision! I do suppose it really does matter on the other schools, because I KNOW most people here choose Bentley or Bryant for business and not UConn. Then again, you need to take into consideration the money…

Ah well, good luck in your decision-making! Hopefully you can make some sense of this post!
