Hey guys, I recently got accepted to UCR for Winter 2010 and I plan to live on/near campus in an apartment. I will be living on my own (I prefer not having a roommate at the moment), and was wondering what type of experiences you guys had with the UCR-owned apartments (Likes, dislikes, etc). Are there any other apartment complexes near UCR, preferably within walking/biking distance that are worth looking into? I'm looking for something somewhat spacious (not all tiny and crammed together) and hopefully semi modern. Any recommendations?

I did a search and didn't find any information, I did a google search and the only apartment complex I could find info for was the Stonehaven apartments which have terrible reviews (lots of complaints about managements, parking lot crime, bugs, etc).

Are the UCR apartments credit based? Do you need a high credit score and stuff do get into one?

I’m assuming traditional apartments that are NOT associated with the UCR campus require a credit approval even if you are a student attending UCR correct?

I’m very new to this subject, I’ve lived at home forever and this will be my first place on my own haha.

Some popular apartments close to campus that aren’t UCR owned is: UV Towers, Sterling, Grand Marc and a few others. Those 3 are the most popular. They are all pretty expensive but Sterling and Grand Marc by far gets the worst reviews. I heard a student got burglarized 3 times in one academic year at Grand Marc. I have experience with Sterling and they’re management blows hard. You’ll love them before signing the lease. But afterwards you can forget the nice treatment. I hear the best things about UV Towers besides their price. But then again Sterling and Grand Marc’s prices are ridiculous also.

The crime is about the same at all the close-by apartments.

You don’t need a credit score. But you do need a guarantor so just in case you can pay rent, or need get rid of the lease contract, they screw your parent’s or guardian’s credit over.

Thanks a lot for your input Urbana. I went to check out a few apartments yesterday in person, the Grand Marc and also Sterling. Sterling apartments were very nice in my opinion, very modern and spacious, but they were full on their 2 bedrooms and might not have another opening unless someone gets kicked out or doesn’t go through with their contract according to the manager.

Not sure what urbana’s talking about, I live in Sterling and absolutely love it. Basketball court right outside my room, washer/dryer in the room. Big rooms. Lots of space. You can rent a big screen hd tv for like 10 bucks a month or whatever. I’ve only been living here two weeks but I’m very satisfied so far. Management has been friendly.

If I can’t get into Sterling when the time comes I’ll probably just deal with the commute everyday and live at home with parents since they don’t mind.

Im moving into Sterling. Look on craigslists or sth like that. I got a girls lease so im paying less than the actual price. She has another room to rent if your interested you can email me and i will give u her phone number.

That’s a pity. You should have asked around about Sterlings or did some searching on the internet. I was about to sign a lease with them for this upcoming year because the interior looked so modern and immaculate, but then I read reviews about the noise level at the apartments (due to parties) and based on that factor alone I chose not to sign a lease with them. As for the water issue… It is the same with the UV Towers as well. The water at the UV Towers seem to be murky white as well. Either its the water company’s fault or all these apartments are supplying us with some funky water. All my pots and pans were stained (a white color) by the water at the UV Towers.

I’m living at Sterling for the summer… Everything seems pretty good. I can’t confirm the party thing bc it’s probably different during the school year. My water seems okay though.

Sterling is convenient… It’s just unfortunate that it’s so expensive.

i lived in university iowa gardens and it was nice,
u can have a whole apt to urself or share a two bed two bath( around 1200 for the whole apt) cable internet included
not noisy at all,
i had friends that lived in sterling and they said it was way 2 loud!

If you are looking to live at Sterling, Fall 2010. Contact me.
Sterling is walking distance from UCR. The place itself is beautiful and furnished. There’s a fitness center, game room, tanning Room, basketball and volleyball courts, computer room, and a pool area. Living at Sterling is also very convenient because there’s a lot if food joints around. Ihop for one is right outside; Food4Less is down the street heading towards Chicago st; Then there’s places like pizza hut, radio shack, the dollar tree, rite aid, mumbles, yogurtland, berry sweet, the movie theaters, geez i could go on forever…ok not really but the list is just way too long. If you’re mildly interested contact me about the details.

I am a freshman at UCR and I don’t want to live in the resident halls because they are so small and expensive. I am looking into uv towers but I am still not sure. Should I be living in the res halls? Do a lot of freshman live in the offcampus apartments?

uv towers = almost just as expensive. if you want to save money, you should look into renting a room in a house.

i don’t know the price of uvt’s but sterling is about $800/month. east lo was about $1000/month (including food)… as a freshmen, I would dorm as the res halls though.

I’m going through the same problem. Sterling looks beautiful I fell in love with it and I’m debating between Res halls or there. The dorms are so small and compact and I don’t do so well meeting new people. I’m not really sure what would be the best option.
