Hello,
My son got into
SLO: EE,
CAL Poly Pomona EE Honors
AND UCR EE Honors + MS.
(He got into UCSB, UCSD, UCI).
But, UCR gave him almost free ride. We have to pay the only dorm.
We are immigrants here and we must go for a loan if he has to pay full tuition and may even have to go for private loans due to our immigration status.
The only concern of choosing UCR is employability. Is UCR Engineering have such a bad reputation and is difficult to get a job during the final year of Electrical engineering. I know SLO is the best of all, but due to the scholarship he was offered, I started researching. In my opinion avoiding student loan should be the first thing to do, but not at the cost of lowering or not having the chances of getting hired after 4 or 5 years of hard work (he may continue to do MS if he gets into UCR).
Any UCR graduates here to offer me some insight, please?
Thanks
Is your son a US citizen?
His employability depends on his status as a US citizen.
It doesn’t matter where he goes to school; employers don’t really discriminate based on school.
No, he is not citizen. He is still on visa, not even permanent resident. Possibility of getting permanent residency by that time is high.
UCR ENGINEERING does not have a bad reputation. Where are you getting your information? The best part of UCR is the Bourne College of Engineering. Matter of fact, UCR EE program is ranked 43rd in the WORLD.

Also, below is a link to U.S. News Global Ranking of 2017 by subject (Engineering, etc…). UCR Engineering is ranked higher than UC DAVIS, UC IRVINE and UC SANTA CRUZ.

Lastly, this ranking gives you a comparison between UC schools, SLO and CPP.

SLO has a good engineering school but not the best but CPP is not so great. CPP graduation rate is around 55%. That’s not so good.
Graduating with an Engineering Degree from a UC school or SLO or CPP will give your son plenty of job opportunities.
Residency status- I have no idea under President Trump. H-1B Visa renewal???
Good luck!
