UCR Medical School

Are there any updates on the progress of UCR's medical school? Are they still trying to raise money or have they completely postponed the project due to the UC budget cuts?

it still going on they just had a debate between the two candidates for dean. the med school is being built mostly through donations so the cuts have a small impact

I heard they had one problem where the state was gonna match donations or something, but it failed somehow…

The med school is still going through, mostly from private donations like Jason2009 said. Nearly all other construction projects have been postponed or halted. The only other construction project that I can think of that’s going through is the Culver Center for the Arts on the UCR ARTSblock in downtown Riverside, and that was after a complete halt on construction and repeated occasions of pushing back its completion/opening date.

The state was going to try and match donations, but it couldn’t, so that’s why med school construction is being funded from private donations.

How far is UCR from receiving enough funding to start construction?

You just can’t believe how misinformed people are on this forum.

Who said anything about a med school construction? There is NO, NADA, ZILCH, ZERO construction for med school at the initial stage. I have told people about this and yet people just keep believing what they want to believe.

The private donation won’t be released until the state contribute their own share. Enough said.

What??
Guess there’s no chance of a UCR medical school by the time I graduate

actually the med school is off campus. They are looking for a partnership with a nearby hospital to save cash

lol lol

10char

Hold on – I believe my post was misread. I never said med school “construction” in the first sentence. I wrote it that way because I know that there is no actual construction going on; I know that the plans are being pushed as much as possible because this is one of their priorities (it will still happen eventually) even if that means other construction that already occurred must be halted and other plans to begin construction or further push proposed construction have been postponed (with the exception of the ARTSblock, which I mentioned). There is a new materials and science building that WAS in construction on campus (and would initially help house operations) and an off campus school was originally planned in the near future. But I also know that funds for the med school were not included in the state’s revised budget for the 2009-2010 fiscal year. This money was to be coupled with donations. So as of now, the med school only has (in the sense that it was already offered) private donations which I also understand to be contingent upon receiving (or not receiving) state funding.

I also I heard that many of the local city govt ( like the City of Rside, San Bernadino, and Mo Val) are pinching in a bit sinc ethey need this med school for the IE’s growing pop

I wasn’t exactly replying to you, Shesasensation. So please don’t take offense.

It’s just that a lot of people associate a new school with new construction, that’s not true in this case.

like the school of education

I wasn’t taking offense. I didn’t mean for it to come off that way. I just thought people were misreading my post. And I think I misread yours too – sorry!

Point is – we won’t be seeing these schools (at least not with an optimistic, realistic seriousness) for a long time. What School of Education? :p

the graduate school of education

Haha, I knew there was a Graduate School of Education… I just joked that no one would know that it existed since we don’t have an actual building only for that.
