UCR or UCLA

Hi I got into UCR for art history/administrative studies..it's basically like a dual major it's not like business in the art world or anything and I got into UCLA for art history. I would ultimately like to work in marketing/advertising and I am wondering what the best choice is.

I think you already know the answer to that question haha

I really don’t! :frowning: ahah I guess what I’m asking is do employers care more about school name or degree?

I hate ucla. But it is a no brainer. They have a national reputation.

I didn’t like the feel I got when I visited the campus and everyone at UCR seemed more friendly and less pretentious. I would just be a liberal arts major at LA and I probably won’t be able to pick up a secure second major or minor there because their options aren’t that great. I know UCLA has the name but idk how employers feel about a liberal arts major from LA.

When I read this thread I thought that UC Riverside would end up costing at least $10,000 a year less than UCLA, hence the reason for your uncertainty. But if it costs the same, go with the better school, UCLA.

Take the necessary internships and you’ll probably have a good chance of securing a job. The average student at UCLA is much stronger than the average student at Riverside, and the majority of the roughly 27,000 students are not pretentious. I’ve lived on the campus for about 2 months in total, and visit at least three times a year (usually around 10), to see friends, attend events, etc. I’ve never gotten the vibe of pretentiousness at all.

Btw, UCLA doesn’t actually offer a business major, but its graduates seem to do just fine.

I believe UCLA will open more doors to you in the long run but only if you take advantage of what the school has to offer you. If you just coast in school, however, it probably won’t matter what school you go to but the name of UCLA is more well known than that of UCR. I also have several friends who go to UCLA and they just love it there. It is in a great city, walking distance to great places, nice campus, prestige, great athletics and a good amount of school spirit. It is your decision, however and if you feel like you would be happier at UCR then you should just go with your gut feeling.

I am just worried about having only art history on my degree at UCLA  I have not fall back of a administration background like I would at riverside…

Plus I think I am going to try to get an MBA in the future and all they care about is GMAT, work experience, and GPA…not nessarily name of undergrad school. My GPA and possibly GMAT score could be higher if I go to UCR. But I still really don’t know…it’s so hard to deny acceptance to UCLA

Well, if there ever were any valid points for attending UCR over UCLA you just gave them. It seems like you have a plan and know what you’re doing.

you can always take business courses at UCLA. UCR has an undergraduate business school unlike UCLA, but UCLA has a bus/econ major and offers courses (however I heard they are pretty hard). I really think you should just visit both schools and decide from there which is the best fit. In your major and being a transfer, I’d go to UCLA to get the most connections. Plus, who knows but you prob will have a higher chance getting into Anderson School of Management at UCLA then compared going to UCR. In my personal opinion, I’d choose UCLA over UCR any day. Its a top-notch school and I have literally hundreds of friends who go to UCLA/UCR. The UCLA friends seem a lot more determined and they have a lot more resources compared to UCR (not bashing on my riverside friends though). The choice is yours.
