UCR or UCSC or ASU barrett honors college

My son got admissions in computer science in college of engineering at UCR, UCSC and ASU barrett honors college.
Which one has best education?

As of 2017 U.S. News Global Ranking and by subject (engineering, etc…). UCR Engineering is ranked higher than UC Davis, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Cruz.

It’s just global focus, doesn’t mean a thing for the undergraduate major.

ASU Barrett is one of the top 10 honors colleges in the country. Asu itself is your basic huge public university but Barrett is excellent. The students have a lot of advantages they wouldn’t have as regular students at UC 's. So, I’d go with Barrett.

Not sure how you know that you were accepted to UCSC since decisions just starting coming out on Wed a day after your post??

I agree with above ^^^ that Barrett Honors has some great advantages.

An advantage of an honors college is giving the small classes and interaction with other top students that you would get if you attended a top college even though your in a large public. This is great for liberal arts classes where a lot of your learning depends on your assumptions being challenged and hearing the thoughts of your fellow students. It seems a lot less applicable to me to computer science.

In the end the ability to get a good job in the CS field is going to depend on your grades, coursework, the ability to do well in technical interviews, and having had internships. I really don’t see an honors college playing a role in this. Of the three I would lean towards UCSC since it is close to the biggest concentration of the tech industry in the country. Summer jobs and coop positions are just a hop away.

thanks @mikemac for your comments

Students at UCR in Bourns College of Engineering are not “regular students at UC’s”. My son is a freshman EE major in BCOE, he lives in a specialized dorms for BCOE students only. He’s having a great college experience. He’s a member of IEEE, has a mentor who is a 3rd year BCOE student, most of his dorm mates attended the 2016 CES in Las Vegas, he’s part of a team at UCR to research and build an Electric Car, and he just toured QUALCOMM Corp. in San Diego. All this so far as a freshman. I’m not familiar with ASU barrett honors college so i can’t make any comments. Have your son visited all these colleges? Everybody’s situation is different but I can tell you that for our family UCR being within driving distance from home has help with his success in many ways. He can come home as often or as little as he wants (homesick, etc…). Meeting new friends and building connections with people with similar goals has definitely contribute to his positive college experience.

Two quick stories - two different families who are friend of ours:

  1. their daughter went out of state for college “Penn State”, dropped out after first year and now attending CCC and living at home.

  2. her son attended UC Berkeley, dropped out after two semesters and now home in Southern CA attending CCC.

At the end of the day, getting a degree in CS from any of the above colleges with give your son plenty of job opportunities. It’s about which college he will have the best chance of success. Choose wisely if you haven’t already.
