UCR Questions?

I have some questions for UCR students, staff, or anyone who knows something about the school. I’m trying to find out more before making any major decisons. I’m a freshman majoring in computer science. Thanks for your time!

Job Prospects

Are there jobs or internships available for incoming freshman with strong skills in their major?

Special Needs Services

Is there special needs services for students with learning disabilities to help them cope? I don’t need help academically, but I will need help dealing with the stress of change or possible anxiety.

Dorming

Will dorms be offered for students who want to dorm alone? I have autism, and I feel it will just be stressful rooming with a total stranger on top of being away from home. What dorms are good for students with strong interests in science and engineering?

Hello robogirl, this UCR board actually isn't too active, but I'll try to answer your questions anyway to the best of my ability. I'm currently a freshman attending UCR.

As Film and Visual Culture major in CHASS (College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences), there are plenty of job/internship opportunities that are strongly recommended for third- and fourth-year students although you can start internships in your second year, I believe. I'm certain that there are plenty of opportunities in BCOE (Bourns College of Engineering, where you would be with a Computer Science major), but I'm not entirely sure how they are because 1. I'm not in BCOE and 2. the first year is usually reserved for learning the ropes of college. I wouldn't entirely doubt anything though. Also, we have regular job/career fairs and workshops, a job/internship database (SCOTjobs) and a Career Center, which can help you with writing resumes among other services.

Yes, UCR has a Student Special Services: Student Special Services - Welcome Page
The services here (Career Center, Learning Center, Counseling Center, etc.) often collaborate and hold workshops on how to manage stress and other types of issues, which can be especially helpful to freshman. I have personally been to workshops on how to deal with the stress of the first quarter of college and they exceeded my expectations. The centers will usually announce their workshops through your UCR webmail. If they don't, you can usually check the centers' homepages or events.ucr.edu (which keeps track of most any type of event associated with UCR, like a master calendar).

Additionally, all the colleges (BCOE, CHASS, and CNAS (College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences)) have excellent freshman transition programs which help with academic and social issues alike. I'm currently in CHASS Connect, which is a year-long series of related courses under one of 5 annual themes. CHASS Connect includes workshops run by peer mentors, who are undergrad students in CHASS and have previously taken the CHASS Connect program when they were freshman.

I believe BCOE has the BCOE Freshman Transition Program, but I'm not sure what other programs they have (as CHASS has 3 different programs for freshman). Here's more info: BCOE Student Academic Affairs

I don't dorm because I live relatively close to UCR, but I am almost certain that dorms won't be offered to single students - it will most likely be a double or triple occupancy. In a few cases, I've heard of quadruple occupancy. UCR admitted a lot more freshman than they have before, and I've heard of some students being denied on-campus dorms and asked into looking at other student housing located near campus (such as Falkirk and Stonehaven). However, the dorms (Pentland Hills, Aberdeen and Iverness, West Lothian and East Lothian) give priority to freshman. If you have a conflict however, you can notify the RA and they will work to make sure it gets resolved. A friend of mine had issues with her roommates and they were able to offer her a room switch.

There aren't entire dorms dedicated to specific interests, but they will have special interest halls. For example, freshman in BCOE can choose the "Enginuity" hall or the "InSTEP" hall. Pre-Business majors, CHASS Connect and Honors students each have their own hall. More information on special interest housing is available here: Housing Services - Special Interest Communities

Hope this is helpful and good luck with your college decisions.
