I have always wondered what the social life is like for a UCR student who commutes like the rest of the vast majority at UCR. Is it harder to meet new people when you’re a commuter? If so how? I surprisingly only know 1 friend that is going who is in CNAS as well. I’m a Microbiology major so how is that department? Is it relatively easy to find study groups and tutoring for people majoring in the Biological sciences? I’m more concerned with socializing academically than doing parties but hanging out would be very nice to hear. Just overall how friendly are the staff and students? I’m a bit quiet at first but I get past that easily once we’ve talked once or twice. I know I asked a lot of questions but any answers would be greatly appreciated!
Not sure. I am a possible incoming freshman and when I went to Highlander Day (Open House). Many people there seemed unenthused to be there.
I didn’t go to Highlander Day but I went to Discover Day and I have to say the majority of people look pleased with the campus and generally enjoyed their time there. I’m not sure if Discover Day had more going on than Highlander Day because the college did seem much more lively than usual but the actual students there looked very happy. I think it would be better to visit on a normal day to get a better view if students are content there.
My daughter is a Freshman dorming at UCR. She is happy with her social life and has made friends. When we visited last year I noticed there were posters about the opening of a new commuter lounge geared to make life easier for those students. It sounds like a that would be a good place to make connections other than on your Major classes and clubs or student groups.
Thank you alot. I’m glad to see UCR realized that it’s probably tougher to make friends when you’re a commuter and that in response they created that. I will definitely check that out.
