I need some advice on transferring!

So, I've been thinking about transferring from UCR to another UC like LA or SD. I know that every college is fine in its own ways, but I'm just not liking Riverside as a city and the campus... UCR has that stigma & I feel a little embarrassed to tell people I go to UCR. But the professors & people there are nice, but I wish I could be somewhere "better"?

I'm a first year & after winter quarter, my cumulative GPA is 3.981. I know that UC to UC transfers aren't as many as CC transfers, so what would be the likelihood that I would be able to transfer?

And what are UC to UC transfer applicants compared with other applicants? I've heard that GPA is the biggest part. Do they look a lot at extracurriculars (I think privates look at extracurriculars more..).

I'll be applying this next academic year but I just wanted to think about my chances. I know I'll be happy if I end up at UCR or at another UC. But I think another school will better fit me.

Thanks!

I was in the same boat a year ago…then I decided to go to community college to get the community college “advantage” and now I’m waiting for decisions…

Your GPA seems high enough for a UC-UC transfer to be successful…depends on your major ultimately…

I dont know about extracurriculars but I think they aren’t as important as GPA and major coursework.

I go to UCR right now but am most likely transferring to either Davis or Cal depending on whether Cal accepts me or not…

Personally, I am transferring because Davis/Cal are a lot closer to home for me and right now that is my major priority. I LOVED riverside and I know very few people say it but my main reason was because I came from a HIGHLY competitive high school and I basically assumed the entire world was filled with back stabbers at the name of competition.
When I went to Riverside, I realized that people there are SO much nicer. If I was struggling in a class, people would get up at 4AM in the morning to teach me a concept or when I fell sick, people took notes and talked to my teachers for me. Honestly, a part of me does not want to transfer but another part understands Davis/Cal are just a better choice for me.

You really did not need to know any of that but once I start talking, it is a little hard to get me to stop…

But onto the important things. I think you have good chances of UC to UC transfer with that kind of GPA but here are a few things to keep in mind:

1) What is your major? Is it a impacted major at the schools you are trying to apply to? For example, if you are applying as business to LA, you need a highly competitive GPA then if you are applying as Anthropology.

2) What is your GPA at the end of your year and a half. I started out with a really high GPA at Riverside by Fall quarter, but when Spring quarter came around and I took three sciences and English, it dipped. So I recommend taking easier classes if all you want to do is transfer.

3) Extracurricular, I don’t think matter much for a UC to UC transfer but have a few activities that are strong and competitive. If you are a science major, PM me and I will tell you a few things you can do.

4) Have fun at Riverside, if for two years all you do is work to transfer, you will waste some of the best years of your life. Enjoy it while you can.

Sorry for talking so much but good luck with the process.

From what I have heard from friends who go to UCR is that they love it. LOL. The professors are great, I have met some of them. What about the city? Riverside is always filled with traffic and is a bit “off” if you get what I mean, but so are SD and LA, especially LA. -.- A UC is a UC, even though we talk a lot of bad stuff with UCR, in the end, it’s a UC, and even going to ANY UC should be great. [: But if you really want to move then you gotta do what you gotta do!!! [:

And answer all those questions posted by UCR_UCD and we’ll know more about you to be able to answer more. [:

Best of luck!
