UCR to UCD

I'm hoping to transfer from UCR to UC Davis for my junior year to be closer to home in the Bay Area. Beyond fulfilling requirements, is there anything I should keep in mind for an inter campus transfer? Also, because I am a Geology major which I'm hoping is not the most popular major at UCD, is it likely I will be accepted to transfer with a GPA around a 3.5? Should I be trying to devote my summer between freshman and sophomore to volunteering (perhaps in the field) or to a job/will that make a difference in my selection? Thank you for your responses.

Make sure you complete the major pre-requisites of course…but if you are capable, finish your UCR general education requirements as well. That way, you won’t have to do the UCD GE requirements later on (UC-UC Reciprocity). It’s not a big deal if you don’t for admission purposes, but once you’ve successfully transfered, it might come back to bite you. You have a very solid GPA… but still, you have a chance to raise it. There’s the end of this quarter and the end of Fall Quarter to do so. I doubt Geology is that competitive to get into. Keep in mind that CCC transfers get priority though, and they have TAG. Transferring to be closer to home is a valid reason for wanting to transfer. However, I am not sure if Davis actually takes your personal statement into consideration for transfer applicants. Do write about why you need to be closer to home though…just in case.

You might want to consider applying to UC Berkeley, which is also in the Bay Area. I know they do take the personal statement into consideration for sure.

I heard rumors that tag will be gone this next Fall. Goodluck getting into UC Davis! I feel like you will! I’m excited for going there this fall!

I’m definitely going to apply to UCSC and UCB as well, but Berkeley seems like a stretch with my current stats. I’d be happy at any of those, as being close to home is my top priority. Am I right to think I have a good chance at getting into UCSC though? I’ll definitely be working to improve the GPA. I hope the fact that CCCs get priority doesn’t affect my admission too much.
