UCR with a D

I am currently a Junior in High school. I have around a 3.3 GPA with an 1800 SAT and a ton of extracurricular involvement in and out of school. I pretty much have my heart set on UCR and I’m planning on apply there this fall. However, I recently got a D+ in my AP Chemistry class this past second semester. Will this destroy my chances of making it into this school. I am really afraid on how this can affect my chances :frowning: :((

Not sure how this will work in your case but the to be UC eligible, you gotta have C’s or above in all of your a-g coursework. Maybe UCR will be lenient.

Do i need a weighted or unweighted C?

C’s or above as in letter grades and a 3.0 unweighted UC gpa.

I’ve taken 4 sciences the rest were above c’s which fulfils the a-g reqs correct me if im wrong

I think if you have a D, you don’t get the benefit of an extra point with D.

The D will figure into your UC GPA regardless if you have satisified the a-g course requirements. I suggest you retake the class this summer to replace the D. If you are unable to retake this summer, I would retake Senior year so at least when you are filling out the UC application, you can put down the class is in progress. Competition for spots at any of the UC’s is getting more competitive, so any time you have a chance to present a stronger application, I would definitely take that opportunity.

A D grade will disqualify that semester from counting toward the a-g requirements, which may or may not be an issue depending on what other science courses you have taken. It will also prevent getting the +1 point for an honors course (given only if grades are C or higher), and will cause damage to your GPA as well as look unsightly to an admissions reader.

One of my close friends was admitted to UCR with a D in AP Biology. It might not get you in, but it won’t necessarily keep you out either. Best of luck!

Coriander23 what were the scores and GPA your friend earned?

How does your transcript read? Our school doesn’t show semester grades, only the year-end grades.

SO does that mean just 2nd semester grades?

If so my second semester this year was a 3.1

Since it was AP Bio, i assume you’ve already met the ‘d’ requirement of 2 years of Lab Science with a C or better.

As noted above, you don’t get the bonus AP point with a D so, unless you repeat the semester, the D will be in your UC GPA.

Honestly, a 3.1-3.3 GPA and 1800 SAT is not good enough to get into UCR. Taking the SAT again could improve your chances a bit. I’d encourage you to look at some CSUs, perhaps Chico and Sonoma.

Good luck,

@NCalRent I am an incoming freshmen at UCR. I think that it’s possible for the OP to get in if he scores higher on an SAT re-take. I got in with a 3.04 GPA and 1940 on the SAT1. My major is Business Admin.
