UC's and Non Academic Classes

I know the UC's do not count the non-academic classes as part of the GPA, as more often than not they the grades for these classes are much higher than the core classes. But what if your grades are the other way around and you have substandard grades (I had several B's in some of these classes) for these non-academic/elective classes? Would they still be ignored as part of admission the same way or could they work against you?

Ignored. They don't matter, period. That is, unless you draw attention to them (e.g. you talk about how much you love art, and somehow got a C in Art II).
