UCs don't look at rec letters?

I've been hearing from some people that the UCs DO NOT even look at recommendation letters from teachers/counselors... Is this true?

Will they look at letters from a private piano teacher?

Nope, do not send letters of recs in. They're immediately thrown away. You should save that letter of rec for a private university.

Check on this depending on purpose of letter. UCs like many colleges do not use rec letters generally for admission, but sometimes those same schools may have an exception (and might actually require rec letters) if you are applying for a music or art school. Not sure if that is what you are doing or whether UC makes that exception.

One exception is music performance at UCLA, which, according to the on-line information, will look at recommendations once you get past the screening program.

Are you serious? They just throw your rec letter away?

UCs don't look at recs, look on their websites. why bother submitting any letters?

dunno about the theater program, but Letters & Sciences, Engineering, Chemistry et al will NOT read them.

Karupt -- UC's may not read your piano teacher's letter, but most will listen to a tape or CD of you playing the piano. Last year, you didn't send the tape/CD to the admissions office, though. If I remember correctly, the admissions website doesn't tell you this very clearly, but if you go directly to the music department website of each U.C. to which you're applying, they will tell you exactly where to send the tape/CD. Berkeley had a special admissions-connected person who was receiving them last year. Good luck!

Karupt, what's the big deal, its a big public school that doesn't have time to read reccomendations. Don't send them Recs.

Nice and simple.
