UC's give better aid than csu's?

I got accepted to UCSB and I just received my financial aid letter. They're giving me about $23,000 financial aid and I have to pay only $9000 or so

But I want to go to a cal state (specifically either sj, pomona, lb or fullerton)
and I got my financial aid for fullerton and lb, its like only $16,000 so.
I have to pay additional $12,000 wth?

Since UC is better and more competitive I thought I'll receive lesser financial aid there but I guess i was wrong

Can someone just clarify how the financial aid works with the uc's and csu's

The UCs have MORE money to give away. they have UC grants to give. they also have the Blue and Gold promise policy.

So, yes, in many cases a UC can be cheaper.

COA at CSU Fullerton is around $23,500 (living on campus). You would only need to pay around $7500 if you are awarded $16,000 in aid.

The COA includes about $4500 for books, supplies, transportation and misc. I suspect you could get by with less in these categories, especially if your cost to travel home on breaks is low.

I think the COA of CSUF is around $25k for THIS YEAR’s school costs…likely more for next year.

Yes, the personal expenses and trans is about $4400.

What is the breakdown of each school’s aid pkg. One may have more loans in it than the other.

To me it sounds like the CSU is very doable. Their total cost is less so 16K is huge for a CSU

Take a look at your offers again. In your case the CSU may be cheaper

$23,508 is their estimate for 2013-14, pending Board of Trustees approval.

DKhetani

What is the breakdown of your FA for UCSB vs. the CSU’s - was it grants, scholarships , loans, work study, etc…
If its mostly loans, it might not be such a great deal.
