Hi, I know that the UCs changed their requirement for the SAT IIs...before, you had to take english, math, and an optional 3rd choice of your own. and i understand that now, you have to take 2, and the subjects are up to you. however, do they still WANT/RECOMMEND you to take 3 if you want to go to the top UCs, or do they really expect everyone to take only 2? and do they really not want certain subjects? I'm really confused on all this. if anyone could explain it to me, i would appreciate it! thanks!
oh, and do they only count tests that you take in one sitting? or can you take 2 one month, and another the next?

They just need two because the new writing on the SAT is the same as the Writing SAT II. If taking math, do not take IC, they want IIC. I would recommend taking a math IIC and another of your choice that you can do best on.

I too am wondering if you would be penalized for not taking the Math level II if applying to Berkeley/LA as a History/English major...

I would take the IIC without a doubt for one of them. I think it would be foolish not to and then realize you need to. You can do half of the problems correctly, and omit half that you don't know how to do and get a 630. The curve is very generous, and with practice you could easily get a 700. Hell, you can omit 7 and still get an 800.

Do we know that for sure? I'm finishing Alg. 2 this year and therefore should be taking Math I. The UC's, just this year in lieu of the new SAT, made math level I and Writing no longer count (Math 1/2, Writing, Elective use to be their core).

Wait, so it's really important that one of the subjects you test on is Math IIC? What if I'm just taking Biology E/M and US History?

My understanding is that engineering/science majors should take Math II and a Science...but for liberal arts majors? Not sure.

will it really look bad if i dont take the math II C? wouldnt it look worse if i take it, and do horrible? i mean, i can get a 780 on the writing part of the new SAT, and am lucky if i can get a 600 on the math. so shouldnt i take something i can do well in, or should i take math? (im intersted mainly in UC schools, esp UCLA, UCSD.)

For 2006, the UC's will require any 2 SAT II's as long as they are in different subjects, except they will not accept Math IC (nor the old SAT II writing). None has said or even implied that math IIC or a third SAT II is necessary or recommended, regardless of major. All such rumors otherwise are speculation generated by persons without actual knowledge.

It makes sense cause its like you're now taking the SAT II Writing while you take the SAT I... You only "should" need to take two more.

:)

The counselors at my school all recommend a math and another subject you will do good in, but if you will not do good on the math, i would do two subjects you will do good in. But if u can do good on the math, then I would do it over another test you can do good in.

So can someone answer if you would be heavily penalized for NOT taking Math 2c even if you want to enter the school as a History major or something of that sort?

No, you will not be penalized for failing to take Math IIC

Yeah, you won't be penalized as drusba said.

I think you meant "Do 'well.'" lol...

:)

drusba:

the engineering program at Berkeley has strongly recommended Math II (erstwhile IIc) in the past, and my guess is that they will likely do so next fall. Other than for such a specialized program, any other SATIIs will do, as long as they are in different disciplines.

What if I want to major in Biology? Would I still have to take Math IIC?

negative, you don't have to take math II.
