UC's + OOS Big Names???

Good morning everyone. Thanks for all the help you've already given me. I'm planning on applying to my favorite UC's and have a music scholarship to SFSU; I'm looking for some OOS schools that I'd have a good shot at. Here's my info again:

GPA:
4.17 weighted
3.82 un-weighted
4.00 UC
Class Rank: 24/422 (5.7%)

Awards/Honors:
National Young Leaders Conference
American Legion Boys State (1 of 6)
Pride Award (Given to students at my high school that best display care for the student environment and show a commitment to making the school a better place.)
School Board Student of the Month

Extracurriculars:
Baseball (4yrs; team captain)
Flag Football (2yrs; co-captain)
Barbershop Quartet (3yrs; student director and lead singer)

Community Service:
ESL Tutor (40hrs)
Vocal Shows (80hrs; I sing with a small group that visits elementary schools in the area. We spend time working with the students and end our stay with a performance.)
D.A.R.E. Role Model (20hrs)
Napa Music Clinics (120hrs; I work as an instructor for all types of new musicians multiple times a year. I get them started, then teach new ideas as they progress.)
TOTAL: 260hrs

Work Experience:
Front Desk Manager: 3yrs (year-round); 8hrs/week

SAT: (I CAN’T take standardized test well…)
SAT I: 560CR 600M 580W = 1740
SAT II: 590BIO 590MATHII

Other:
I love music! I’m over involved with my high school choir program: Section Leader since freshman year; 3yrs concert choir; 3yrs chamber choir; 2yrs vocal wkshp; 2yrs barbershop; student director of beginning men’s choir this year.

Applying To:
UCB: Reach ($55 for shot at No. 1 public in the nation - I'll take the chance!)
UCSD: Slight Reach
UCD/UCSB: Match
UCSC: Safety
SFSU: Safety/Music Scholarship

I'm looking for some OOS schools with "big names" in interesting places. What are my chances for schools like U Washington (Seattle), NYU?, Boston University? Where should I look? Thanks!

I wouldn't say UCSD is a slight reach, although it's not as much of a reach as UCB, your SAT scores make it a "reach" opposed to a "slight reach"

If I were you I would look into...

U-Washington (Decent chance)
UGeorgia (Good chance)
UTexas (Good chance)
BU (Pretty decent chance...but it's not public)
NYU (Reach...and also not public)
U-Illinois- (Decent chance)
Penn State (Slight reach)
U-Pittsburgh (Slight slight reach)

batman32c:

UCB: Reach
UCSD: Slight Reach
UCD/UCSB: Match
UCSC: Safe Match

Thanks. How about U Arizona or U Oregon? I feel good about getting into those two...what are some others? I'm just curious where else I have a shot now that I'm done with the UC app.

How could you be in reach of UCB and slight reach of UCSD? UCB is a much harder school to get into.

I am gonna agree with Flopsy, I can understand that test bit you. I know alot of smart people that should have been Berkeley and UCLA bound but those damn SAT's killed their chances.

Truly qualified applicants to the schools you listed have the ability to take the test better than you demonstrated

"Truly qualified applicants to the schools you listed have the ability to take the test better than you demonstrated"

Did you really need to say that?

Thanks Yargg. Yeah, I've always sucked at standardized tests and I guess I always will. DanielHagos - I agree; I also think it's dumb to think that the only "smart" people end up at UCB or UCLA. I have no No. 1 choice and I like UCD (match) and UCSD (slight reach) as much as UCB..which is good! I'm going applying to UCB, UCSD, UCD, UCSB, and UCSC for sure and have the music scholarship at SFSU...I'm just looking for some OOS schools that I'd have a good chance at, like U Washington. Anywhere else?

Here, I have a new idea. This is a list of EVERY school that has a good reputation/nice location/school spirit/OOS prestige/etc. that I have interest in:

UCB
UCLA
UCSD
UCD
UCSB
UCSC
SFSU
USC
U Arizona
U Oregon
U Michigan
U Washington
NYU
Boston University

I am NOT applying to all of these (maybe not even half.) I just want to know my chances...especially to the non-UC schools and specifically U Wash, NYU, and BU...and anywhere else that people are crazy about...Thanks for the time everyone.

OK, 9 of 218 viewers have posted something in this thread. I've made 3, meaning that 97.2% of the people that view don't write anything!!! I need your help. You, yes you reading this. Stop reading and start writing. Topic: OOS that match me. Go! Write anything at least mostly productive in helping me! Thanks.

U Arizona- Safety/Very good match. Expect some merit $ from them b.c of your GPA/Rank
U Oregon- Same as Arizona
U Michigan- Reach. Your SAT score and the fact that you're not in-state will really hurt. I wouldn't apply if I were you
U Washington- Same as UMich although its slightly less of a reach. Still a reach though, and it's worth applying to
NYU- Big reach, probably not worth applying to
Boston University- Reach, but worth applying to.
SFSU- Safety. I think you're guaranteed to get in.

There we go! Thanks KingJames23, exactly what I needed to see. For the record, I've been accepted to SFSU w/ a music scholarship already. Who's gonna help next?

Two things:

1) To KingJames - do you have any estimate on how much merit $ is normal/probable/etc. for someone in my range at U Arizona or U Oregon. Since they are OOS, that could be good to know.

2) To all y'all - I applied to UCB, UCSD, UCD, UCSB, and UCSC; already accepted to SFSU; I feel good about U Arizona and U Oregon (see above). Who likes one more than the other and why? Also, U Wash and Boston U. Should I apply to only U Wash, only BU, or both; just trying to see if it's worth my $ for the app fees.

Thanks for reading this...now right what's on your mind!!!

Arizona over Oregon. Arizona is the #45 public school, and Oregon doesn't even make the top 62. Although it really depends on your major, Arizona has awesome weather, insanely hot girls, really really nice campus (from what I hear from reviews/campus virtual tour) and not such a bad location. San Diego and Mexico aren't THAT far. If you're interested in business, Arizona has the #18 undergraduate business program in the entire US. Arizona's other very strong programs are:

-Management Information Systems
-Nursing (probably doesn't apply to you)
-Astronomy
-Pharmacy
-Creative writing
-Aerospace Engineering

It's hard for me to estimate how much aid they would give you though

Ding ding ding U Arizona creative writing!!! Good to know. I like U Oregon too...still have time to decide. KingJames you also said your opinion was that I'm a reach at U Wash and Boston U. Do you think either/both are closer to super reach or slight reach/match? Thanks for your opinion...since you're the only person who seems to post in my threads and I'm the only one posting in yours...how's life...or something?

Hmmm, although both BU and UDub are both in the middle between slight reach/match and Super reach, I'd say both are definitely closer to slight reach/match than to super reach. Your GPA and Rank as well as EC's/Awards/Work/Community service definitely keep you out of the "super reach" league. Before you apply to BU though, keep in mind that although the location is great, the campus is ugly as hell in my opinion. How about applying to Penn State, Pitt, or Georgia as matches? Or Illinois or Wisconsin as reaches?

Hmm, I didn't know that BU had an ugly campus. The pictures look nice, but they wouldn't show ugly pics...I'll think about it. I think the city of Boston would be cool though. I really like Seattle and know the campus is great, making it a better fit if BU looks how you say it does. So, you asked about U Arizona, Florida St., and UConn...where else?

I also applied to LSU, Arizona State (accepted), West Virginia University (accepted), Tulane (they sent me a thing in the email saying I don't have to pay the application fee and no essa, so I applied, but wrote the essay anyways. Still think it's a big reach though), University of Kansas, and University of Florida (also a big reach, just crossing my fingers. I just felt bad not applying to a reach, so I applied to UF and then got the Tulane offer)

"How about applying to Penn State, Pitt, or Georgia as matches? Or Illinois or Wisconsin as reaches?"

Georgia, Illinois, and Wisconsin don't excite me...unsure about Pitt...Penn State might be worth some research. I'll respond to your schools in your thread to move it up a bit.
