UC's/Other colleges for Engineering

I'm looking at majoring in some kind of engineering, either mechanical, eletrical, or chemical (haven't decided yet). I'm a CA resident and want to go to a school in state. My first choice is UC Berkeley, but I don't believe I have a realistic shot at getting in there. So my question is, what other schools in California are good for engineering? I would prefer to go to a UC, but I'm open to anything.

The next highest-ranked UC for engineering is UCLA, followed by UCSD and UCSB.

almost all UCs provide decent engineering education...if you want to go for reputation UCB, UCSD, UCSB, UCLA

cal poly and harvey mudd are also gr8 options for a excellent undergraduate engineering education .

After Berkeley, I would suggest UCLA, UCSD, USC, UC Davis, UCSB, and UCI, in that order. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Harvey Mudd are also good choices for Engineering.

OK that's good most of those colleges are on my list of ones I'm applying to. Harvey Mudd unfortunately is way out of reach for me I think. Ideally I'd like to to go UCB or UCLA I think, but the probability of me getting into either one is slim. So it looks like my next best choice is San Diego, which I think I can get into OK. I hear UCSB is a pretty big party school? If so, then I'd probably steer away from it, it's not really the type of environment I'm looking for. Anybody else have something to offer?

UCSB's certainly not too shabby for engeering, it's graduate engeering overall is ranked #21 in the country by US News, with Chemical engeering ranked #9 and Materials engeering ranked #3. In reply to your concerns about UCSB, check out mikemac's excellent posts in this topic. It should give you a decent idea of what the campus is like and whether it would fit you:

i hear that academically sd is better than la, atleast in engineering.

As others have suggested, take a look at cal poly, usc, and harvey mudd. Harvey Mudd can be pretty selective though...we'd have to know your gpa/SAT to give you a narrower list.

Harvey Mudd is marginally harder to get in than UCLA/UCB. So if UCB is out of reach, HMC is definitely also out of reach.

Well since you mentioned it I'll give you a brief overview of my stats.

GPA: Unweighted = 3.86, weighted = 4.79
Ranked 25/787 (top 3% or so)
SAT: 2060 (retaking in October, shooting for 2150+, but that doesn't mean I'll get it)
SAT II's: 800 Math IIC, 770 Chem
Also: AP scores: 5 Calc BC/AB, 5 Chemistry, 4 US History, 4 Statistics

I think my grades/test scores are strong, but my main problem is that I don't do a lot of EC's or clubs, and no community service or volunteering. Also not looking at getting a lot of schlarships or anything because my parents both make good money, so I'm ruling out the more expensive schools like USC.

mercinator:

UCB/UCLA: Match (Engineering)
UCSD: Safe Match (Engineering)
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Safety
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Super Safety

Oh...well that's a better shot than I thought I had. I figured I was somewhat screwed because of my lack of EC's and clubs with leadership positions (or just any clubs for that matter). But I guess my test scores and grades make up enough for it to give me a decent shot. Sweet.

no those things dont really matter unless your applying for real elite schools, and you had said you had ruled those schools out.

Even with the lack of ECs, I would try for HMC. I think UCB and UCLA may be slight reaches but very realistic.

ECs matter more for elite privates. UCB/UCLA are more number driven and that's why people say your chance is very realistic.
