UC's - The SAT I Does Matter Alot

<a href="http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/compreview/0113_meeting/nonadmits.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/compreview/0113_meeting/nonadmits.pdf</a></p>

The link above shows some UC admissions statistics for applicants with SAT I scores above 1400. The following percentages show the admit rate for California applicants with scores above 1400 (not applying as an enginering major). Right next to that percentage is the overal admit rate.

Berkeley: 73.9% / 23.9%
Davis: 95.2% / 56.8%
Irvine: 96.4% / 53.8%
Los Angeles: 75.5% / 23.5%
San Diego: 87.6% / 37.2%
Santa Barbara: 91.7% / 50%

I do not believe anyone ever said it does not matter. What the UCs say is that SAT II's are more important and GPA even more so. That report with graphics should be fair warning to two groups of people who may have high SATs -- the vast majority of those with a 1400 or higher SAT who were not admitted fall into two categories, out-of-state applicants and those with GPA's lower than the college's average admittee.

My question is... Why are people so pessimistic about my chances at the UC's even though I'm in the top 5% of my class, my SAT I is 1440, my SAT II average is above 700, I have taken five AP's (four scores of 4 and a score of 5), I am taking four more this year, and I have been highly involved and devoted to four clubs during high school. I don't understand it when people call UCSD a reach for me... Will a 3.8 UC GPA hurt my chances THAT badly in context of everything else?

"Will a 3.8 UC GPA hurt my chances THAT badly in context of everything else?"

Not at all. Im kind of in the same boat as you.

I talked to a ucsd representative and she told me that 70% of people who attend ucsd have a gpa of 3.8-3.9 (the higher gpa in the avg. admit probably takes into account those who chose to attend berkley and ucla, and presumably applied to sd as a safety)

The same statistics are evident in the other uc's numbers. Do you really think that uc irvine's avg student gpa is 3.93? Their attendance gpa is probably closer to 3.6.

You're in...people over-estimate the selectivity of the UC's. Yeah Your GPA isn't great but it's not bad either. You should be in fairly easily.

Are you guys stating your GPA from 10-12, or from 9-12? The UCs don't factor in freshmen year, correct?
