Is there any way I can become more competitive for my reach schools like UCLA and maybe UCSD?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

UCLA: reach
UCSD: slight reach (almost a match)
UCD/UCSB/UCI: match
CalPoly: not positive, maybe safe match?

It actually might be better...what is your UC GPA? (this is your GPA for all academic classes grades 10 & 11). If your UC GPA happens to be around 4.2 or so, than your chances will be:

UCLA: slight reach:
UCSD: match
UCD / UCSB / UCI: safe match
Cal Poly: safety

You asked how to improve your chances at UCLA. The best things I can tell you are to get your grades up as much as you can & retake the SAT for a higher scores. Your EC's are more than acceptable to get into UCLA.

my UC GPA is 4.0 and sorry for not writing that in the first message. I go to a really competitive public schools (last year 14 students went to Ives, 20 went to UCLA, 20 went to USC, and another 30 went to good schools (out of a class of 300 students)....would that help my acception to UCSD?)

No, that won't help. Actually, the more competitive the school the worse off you are at most State schools. They want top 10%. It's well know kids at top privates get into ivies and get rejected by top states.

I would disagree that with your SATs, even a mid level UC is a safety. Your chances will go way up if you can break 2000. I would really work on that.

i am pretty sure i am in the top 10% but my school does not rank. should i bring up my gpa for uci or should i focus more on sat and sat 2s. and if i do not do varsity tennis next spring, will it affect my admission (i dont think i will have space in my schedule for it)?

For my AP Stat class, we have to do a survey project and do an SRS and our SRS shows a lot of people with about your stats getting into UCs by the dozen ;)

awesome! which UCs?

huh???????

Well, we only asked about UCLA, UC Berkeley, and UC Irvine but a lot of people got in and not all of them could have been top 10% because that would be only 14 kids...plus we don't rank...

That's the kicker, right there.

what do you mean that's the kicker? do u mean that there was some bias involved in these statistics made by bluephish?

I think he means a lot of people get into UC Irvine and it's "easy", which is true. However, a lot of people got into UCLA and UC Berkeley too. 43% of the people in our survey who answered all the questions were accepted into UCLA and/or UC Berkeley and our survey was a large majority students in the senior class so it's likely that the true proportion is near 40%.

I think berkeley's acceptance rate is around 23%. Your high school doesn't represent all applicants.

that's true but I'm saying he has a chance of getting into a UC and not just Irinve :)

your sample is biased to area, socio-economic status, etc. You cannot extrapolate that data outside of your school.
PLUS; its a survey. I would not rely on that for fact.

I think you have an OK chance. Berkeley is especially obsessive about academics, so bring up the SAT score, and you'll have a pretty good shot.

Bring up the verbal! Colleges want to know you can write very well; this mainly goes for privates, but is also a factor for public. That verbal score....is painful. :(

And LA was extremely selective 2 years ago (about 10%) while Cal was around 21%. Cal is much more academically oriented admissions, so I'd say that you have a better chance at LA.

if i do not do varsity tennis next spring will it affect my admission ( i dont think i will have space in my schedule)?

also what could my hook be from my resume? eagle scout?

Berkeley is out of your reach with that SAT score. Don't worry so much about your ECs...and no eagle scout isn't a hook.

yeah i know berk is out of reach. is there anything at this point that i can do to increase my chances at mid tier UCs other than solid essays?

This is a REALLY confusing thread!
Raise the SAT I and you'll havd a good chance at UCSD.
You should have no problem getting into UC Irvine.
UCSB would be a good match for you.
