my friend is considering going to one of these two … can anyone help my friend select which school … depending on social life, environment, academics, programs, ease to get into good grad school, party life, e.t.c.

I'd say UCSC...if you've visited their campus it's freakin beautiful. However, if you hate nature then you have a problem! Also depends where you're from. Nor Cal culture is a bit different from So Cal culture. UCSC you'll find more liberals and hippie types, they won't care about class and money as much as people down south.

Just my .02

I'm from Santa Cruz so might be a bit biased, I didn't even apply to UCSC though too close! Berkeley here I come!

search around, i think there is an old thread about ucsc vs ucr

pick ucsc

UCSC
Riverside isnt the best, or even close to the best.

ucsc. if u see my other thread, i know someone who picked ucsc over princeton....

http://www.studentsreview.com/CA/UCRV_c.html this site has a bunch of UCR students opinions on the place...

surfing vs riverside..nuff said

anything vs riverside..nuff said

"UCSC you'll find more liberals and hippie types, they won't care about class and money as much as people down south. "

Mostly true. Riverside County is heavily conservative republican. Some parts of L.A. city are populated with liberals and hippie-types. But if you were to go to Riverside (a 1-1/2-hour drive without traffic.)you wouldn't have any of that; therefore, go to UCSC.

Riverside's campus is in the middle of nowhere...

ummm santa cruz definitely.... my boyfriend is at UCR, so i visit him all the time. i would hate to live in riverside....especially for college. everyone goes home on the weekends. the dorms are completely empty. santa cruz for sure!
