UCSB Admission - Class of 2022

Hello all, I am currently a high school senior and my number 1 school is UCSB, and I had a few questions about admission.

I have been honestly doubting myself as to whether I can get in or not. I filled out the UC app hoping I would get accepted. I’m just worried. Could anyone offer me maybe some good feedback to see if I’m a good candidate for SB or not?

I am a California resident

SAT w/ Essay 1250/1600
Essay portion: 24 (8-6-8)
GPA weighted: 3.94
I have over 120+ hours in community service in hs
I’m the first generation to attend college in my family

I’ve taken over 15 UC approved honors/AP courses

I’ve passed AP Language and AP Psychology AP exams with a “3”.

My senior year as it stands:
Physics CP - B
AP Calculus AB - B-
Spanish 4 - A
Advanced Choir - A
AP English Lit Comp - B
AP US Government - A-

I’m simply worried about getting a C in AP Calc this semester and getting a D next semester. I took Calculus AB without taking PreCalculus at school. I explained in my UC App that I didn’t have help writing the essays except proofreading by my mom, and that a lot of my friends have their college counselors but my family couldn’t afford it and we couldn’t afford SAT or ACT tutors. I really want to be accepted to UCSB, it’s my dream school in all honesty. Thanks guys!

@addydaddy69 is that GPA capped?

Has everyone got the portal for UCSB?

My S18 has the portal. Nothing new posted for him lately.

@lovespink Does your son’s portal say “Decision pending”? It makes it sound so imminent! Hard to believe it would stay that way for 2 months. Maybe some schools use different phrases like “under review.” Decision pending just seems like such a tease.

Is there any chance some students will hear back early?

I think everyone gets in during March.
ALso @lodiswim2018 your GPA and SAT are a bit low, but hopefully your EC’s and essays make up! I heard that UCSB looks more at these factors as well.
Anyways, can someone quickly chance me for ChemE?
4.08 UC GPA, 1490, few math awards, passed AP calc, chem, lang, tutoring, science olympiad, swim, cross country, etc…

@xafl134 About the beginning of March, Regents scholars will be notified and Chancellor’s Reception invites will go out. That’s a few weeks before the regular admissions come out. So yes, assuming it’s like previous years, some will find out a few weeks early.

Which major?

4.67 4.0 unweighted. 33 act. History major. Will I hear back early?

@xafl134 I think it depends how much they liked your EC’s & essays. Those supposedly count for half of your admission decision.

If people here haven’t seen these, you can see how you check out. http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/campuses/files/freshman-profiles/freshman_profile_santa_barbara.pdf

Overall freshman admit rate was 32% for fall 2017. However, as others have said, it’s holistic review so you really can’t say what your chances are.

OP, just don’t get a D this semester and you should be set.

If you don’t get in and UCSB is where you really want to go, consider doing a california community college and utilizing UCSB’s transfer admission guarantee (TAG) program. You might know about this already, but I didn’t as a high school senior and I really wish I did. http://admissions.sa.ucsb.edu/applying/transfer/tag

California resident applying for the actuarial sciences major.

UC W/C GPA: 3.79
SAT: 1450 (700 English/750 Math), essay 7/6/7
ACT: 31
ECs: 25 hours community service, did a few of my first high school’s mainstage shows with speaking and lead roles, various small clubs. Not much overall.

AP Calc AB score 3

College classes in calc 1&2, political science comparative and american, physical anthropology and business

I went to 3 different high schools and 2 community colleges over the past 4 years

Faced massive hardship junior year which was why I left my first high school, I did not attend full time school second semester junior year, but caught up over the summer at community college. My GPA dropped from about 3.95 to 3.4 during this time, but rose back up to 4.5 senior year so it is unfortunate those grades are not available to them.

I do not believe my stats are good enough but hopefully they consider extenuating circumstances. UCLA and UCSD requested supplementals so that gives me hope!

I’m sorry, I seemed to have forgotten to attach what major I applied under. I applied under Mathematics (First choice) and Mathematics in College of Creative Studies for my second choice.

Did anyone else receive the invite to the Chancellors Reception?

@Zumanyx1 how did it come? Portal, email or mail? Also are you in state?

@JessicaF they said snail mail, OOS NY reception

@CopperlineX2 I don’t understand… who said? Did you guys get one?

@JessicaF check other UCSB thread. Two OOS posts. 2022 applicant thread. Nothing in our mailbox
