UCSB Admissions 2020

@knguyen1297 no I’m a high school senior
Why would you say I’m a transfer ? Transfers don’t even get decisions yet

Comp/sci college of engineering - accepted with regents! super excited!

@college15161
What are your stats? Just curious what regents was this year.

Accepted to CS at CoE!

Accepted to alternate major (Mathematical Sciences)

4.0 UC GPA
33 ACT
740 Math II, 720 Math II, 730 US History
Strong Essays, good ECs
In-State Asian Male
Initially applied to Computer Engineering

I’m honestly surprised/torn by this. I was accepted to UCI for Computer Engineering last week, and I assumed SB would come through for me as well. Isn’t Irvine supposed to be more selective than Santa Barbara?

Also, this result is worse than a waitlist, because policies make it virtually impossible to transfer into an engineering major. At least with a waitlist, I would have had some chance of getting my first choice major. UCSB was also one of my top choices, and accepting me for my alternate major (that doesn’t seem useful for any careers), while making it impossible to switch majors, is nothing more than a slap to the face.

Luckily, I have UCI to fall back on, so that’s most likely where I’ll be headed.

accepted as pre bio major with l&s honors
4.05 uc gpa
34 act
accepted: ucd, ucsc, ucsb, sjsu
waitlisted: uci, ucsd
rejected: ucla, slo

@brokencoconut My DD was rejected from UCLA Mech Engineer, Waitlisted UCD, Waitlisted UCSD Rejected from UCSB.

Ticks all the boxes.

So far only Accepted into U Mich and McGill but no UCs.

We live in SOCAL I agree with you. UC system is broken for people in state.

Would love to hear from other engineering students especially women who applied into Mech Engineering.

ACCEPTED!!!
College of Letters and Sciences
History Major
ACT 31
GPA 3.9
Accepted: Tulane, Elon, Cal Poly, UCSC
Waitlisted: UCD
Rejected; UCLA
in-state white male, norcal

Accepted for pre-bio  , honestly I would trade my acceptance to UCI, UCSB, UCD, UCSB all for acceptance to UCLA. Still so sad I got rejected from there :frowning: :frowning:

Daughter just filled out SIR for Pre-Bio (Marine Biology), Honors Program. So excited for her, congrats to everyone who got in!

@nadinev Your daughter has similar scores to mine, and I was admitted to L&S in the past (and I bet she would have been too). Engineering is a different story, and your daughter didn’t get in because she is not qualified enough - not because out of state students are taking her spot. The major is very impacted, and many admitted applicants have nearly perfect test scores and 4.5+ GPAs (which you conveniently forgot to mention?).

I live in Southern California and was accepted to every UC but Berkeley, but I understand that Berkeley admissions standards are higher than my grades. This is not because I am in-state, but because I was underqualified.

@tromicron 4.1 GPA

Somewhat shocked I was admitted, but extremely excited!
3.96 GPA
1940 SAT
Lack luster ECs, average essays

Admitted to biopsychology!!!

@nadinev My point stands - I’m sorry if my statement came out brash, as her scores are incredibly high compared to most students.

Last year, average freshman admitted GPA was 4.19. Your daughter was a bit shy of that, and she went for engineering. Unfortunately, that’s a large gap she would need to fill with other parts of her application.

ME applicants - I did read somewhere recently (sorry no link) that last year 1000 applications were received for 48 freshman ME openings. If true, that would explain the excellent stat kids that are being rejected to ME.

When we went to UCSB for a visit, they recommended that everyone who applies to ENG puts a second choice major from the College of Letters and Science. Did you all apply for a secondary major that was non-ENG?

Accepted instate for Mathematics (alternate). I applied for CS and am sad that I didn’t get in for it. Does anyone know if I can somehow switch into CS? That’s what I’m truly passionate about and have done many things revolving around it. Also, what does a Math major do for a living? Thanks guys

Btw, my scores:

1990 SAT (570 CR, 720 M, 700 W)
710 SAT II Math 2
640 SAT II Physics
4.3 UC GPA
good essays revolving around technology, Silicon Valley, etc. Great ECs

@calmom2016 Thanks for your reply. Nope! No other majors. That wasn’t an option for my kid. She only wants to design and build stuff. We know that ME is especially difficult to get into along with some of the other Engineering programs. It’s especially hard for young women. At UCLA they have 15% women to 85% men in ME. Very similar at all the other UCs. She really wanted a Socal option but may not be in her cards. She was accepted in U Mich ME program. She visited on Monday. It’s a top program. But it’s cold and far! But my kid will be fine. She’s still waiting on a few other schools. She can only attend one. if not getting into a UC is her biggest problem it’s not a big one. It’s just the UCs acceptance are really baffling. Warm regards

Accepted into Pre-Biology (seems to be many others accepted to bio in this thread)!

Really happy, bc I was rejected from UCSD, UCD, and UCLA (and accepted by UCSC). Haven’t heard back from Irvine yet, but I think so far I’m leaning towards UCSB.

STATS
In-state
3.59 UC GPA (upward trend; it’s a miracle I got in with this GPA though)
I GOT 4 C’s total…However, I did do much better 2nd semester and got an A or B in the classes I previously got a C in.
2300 SAT (one sitting)
11 AP classes (dumb…I should have only taken 8 max bc of the capped GPA)
Essays might’ve been cheesy, but they were heartfelt…wrote about family hardships in my life.
Did not apply for financial aid bc on paper we look much more richer than we actually are and after much research, realized we wouldn’t have qualified anyways…welp.
ECs: unpaid internship at oncology medical center, only 100 hrs community service, won state and qualified for internationals for DECA (business club), taught science to elementary school students, 4 officer positions total (secretary, lit mag editor, fundraising chair, and VP)

Also probably helped that I mentioned that I was capable of good grades, and would probably (and did end up) get a 4.3 GPA last semester.

edit: realized I left out some ECs and other info

Is UCSB good for accounting?

By some bizarre miracle, I was accepted!
Major: Global studies
SAT: 770 CR 670 M 800 W
APs: apush (5) lang (5) calc (5)
UC GPA: I honestly don’t remember probably like 3.5. Downward trend too lol
In-state
Okay ECs but pretty strong personal statements. I still don’t know how I got in I have two D’s on my transcript but woohooooooo
