I just got a packet in the mail from UCSB containing a "Black Book". It's just a book talking about all the opportunities for black students, clubs, and organizations.

I thought the UC's weren't able to see your race other than for demographics?

every college has some sort of Black Student Union… Or Latino Alliance or something. It’s not discriminating it’s just a way for the underrepresented minority to have an inner support system within large universities like the UCs.

I got a letter - addressed to my parents! - from an associate professor of Asian American studies at UCSB. Guess which demographic I fit into (somewhat).

Yea, I just gave the letter to my mom and then I saw that damn book again. Did you also notice that your counselors are the same race as you? That’s some strangeness… Makes me feel a bit weird and uncomfortable TBH.

We’re all Americans. I don’t see why they need to “segregate” us by treating us differently (us being all people of Color, since an Asian member got one too!). Meh.

I did notice the counselor thing. It is a little weird, I’m in a program at UCLA specifically designed to get more black applicants, but they made us feel really comfortable with it. UCSB didn’t have the same effect.

Students need to start complaining because I find it a bit offense, TBH. And when I got the brochure when I was in high school I was completely turned off from the school.

I’ve had the same problem just this week I attended a two night biology conference that included free food and free hotel which was specifically for people of lower income. I hated the fact that when I went to go sign in they asked “are you with the minority conference?” it irritated me a bit because they can’t say are you here for the bio conference. Also for Santa Cruz they emailed me something for the Hispanic group over there. I personally liked to be treated like everyone else and don’t want any special help. I think it makes it seem like they are pointing out that you are a minority and need help to succeed in college. That black book thing is a slap in the face if I was an African American.

Lol they’re just trying to help hello??? I love how people get so offended by nothing, I got one too, it was kind of funny, but they’re just trying to promote their programs, not talking about these programs and making them known is what white people do, keep them on the hush hush

^i have to somewhat agree. they just want you guys to know that the programs and support system exists if you need it. even though i have a personal grudge against ucsb lol, i doubt they meant anything by it. but as someone else mentioned about the whole “are u here for the minority conference” thing…well thats just infuriating.

I’m perfectly aware that they’re just trying to make us feel welcome. It actually kind of feels like they’re apologizing, feeling like they did something wrong to us so they want to make us feel like we’re at home. Kind of reminds me of a small child, TBH! Or someone who has never communicated with a person of Color so they’re trying to be sensitive, haha.

The more jesse jacksons/al sharptons that always talk about the man holdin the brothas and sistas down, the more public schools will feel inclined to outwardly show their support for the acceptance and advancement of colored folk.

I ain’t got to do shat but stay black and die…

I agree with redoplease, the minority conference is a big strong…
but for everything else, get over it lol, i just wanna figure out if i got in already. Ill take the black book and anything else they want to hand over to me for free :)

oh and im a halfie, which is normally black enough for everyone to consider me black
