UCSB chance me!!!

I just submitted my app a couple months ago so I’ll be very appreciative if you guys can chance me!

Uc GPA: 4.04
Upward trend: 2.5, 3.5, 4.0, and senior year is still in progress but first sem I got 5 As and 2 Bs
SAT: 1430 21/24 essay
SAT 2 math: 690…bad :((

Highschool rigor is also p good…9-10 ap/ib and if I count honors it’s 10-15

Essays: very proud of them. Not saying they’re the best in the world but they’re def solid and I worked very hard

Ecs:
Freshman-sports and my first clubs. I attending a coding academy
Soph-I got 2 positions for clubs and I began teaching at the academy. Sports as well and library community service
Junior-I got 3 positions and they’re all leadership. I continued teaching, community service(100+hours), coding internships, study competitions, leader position for my internship out of the coding interns, awards for community service internship and competitions, Local library community service
Senior-continued teaching at the coding academy, 3 leadership positions, more competitions

I would say my SAT, ECS, and ESsays are my best points. Theyre all solid for ucsb stats and I consider them my strong points in my app
My GPA is definitely my weakest point. I hope the upward trend helps but it’s in range for ucsb but still below avg for cs

I really want to go here for cs-I don’t know what I’ll do it I don’t get my major :frowning: I hope they see the passion I put in my 4 years for comp sci and they overlook the subpar GPA…
I heard they consider ecs/essay 50% and sat/GPA 50%??? If they do that works great for me imo…

Thank you all for any insights!!!

Yes, UCSB does put more emphasis on EC’s and essays than some of the other UC’s which seems it could help your chances.

Your UC GPA and SAT scores are within range.

Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19 (capped weighted):
UCSB: 54%

25th - 75th percentiles for SAT:

UCSB: 1210- 1450

UCSB’s Engineering Department is small in comparison to other UC’s so CS will be a tough admit. Your leadership positions should help. I think you will get into UCSB but not 100% sure you will get into CS. Did you select an alternate major that you could live with just in case?

UCSB Application Review Criteria:

  • Santa Barbara
    *
  • Very important: Academic GPA, Application essay, Rigor of secondary school record, Standardized test scores

  • Considered: Character/personal qualities, Class rank, Extracurricular activities, First generation college student, Level of applicant's interest, State residency, Talent/ability, Volunteer work, Work experience

  • Note: Eligibility established by high school GPA, course requirement, and SAT scores. Special consideration for disadvantaged students

Best of luck.

@Gumbymom I’ve thought about other majors but nothing seems like computer science level to me…I can’t see myself doing anything else

Another possibility I thought of was the applied math-comp sci major. I see berkley, ucla, ucsd they all have it. But out of these three I think realistically ucsd undeclared is my only option, but between undeclared at ucsb vs ucsd I am stuck on what I should do.

In terms of difficulty I wouldn’t say one is harder than the other…if I’m trying to switch into a major I’m going to be taking intro/GEs so I can’t consider a specific college based on difficulty. Plus both majors are impacted so it’s not like ucsd math cs is easier than comp sci at ucsb. The only concern is how competitive each major is. I have no clue have more competitive ucsb cs is vs ucsd math cs. That would be the important factor because that gives me a better than at ucsd

Nevertheless I’ll be willing to work hard for a competitive GPA at either college…whether it’s cs or math cs a high GPA is crucial and I understand that. However if I do get cs at ucsb it’ll be a 100% attendance.

What do you think I should do in this situation?? Thank you!

Until you get your decisions, I really cannot offer you any concrete advice. If you do get into UCSB or UCSD but not into CS, it will be very difficult to switch later.

My younger son only wanted CS also when he applied, so he was willing to give up on any of the schools where he was not a direct admit. He is happy with his choice and doing well by studying what he wants.

@Gumbymom thank you! Hopefully everything works out and I can get cs at ucsb!

@Gumbymom oh and by the way, I was looking at the link you sent and he enrolled students’ GPA high school average for cs 2015-2016 was 4.01 uc GPA right? Or is it weighted GPA?

Enrolled was 4.01 capped weighted but admitted was 4.15 for 2015-2016. Unable to find more current data but you are definitely in range.

Isn’t CS in the prestigious College of Engineering at UCSB? That will make it tougher to get in. My intern from a top Silicon Valley high school (who had very good grades and test scores) did not get in. He declared CS as his desired major. He did get wait-listed at UCB and eventually got in there though.
