Im honestly really surprised with UCs, and I think i’ve learned the hard way that they will slaughter you if your GPA is crappy. I got into a BS/MD program, which is pretty reputed (they were comparing themselves to cornell during my interview and were like “pick us over cornell!”, and I know the majority of admits got into ivies too. <8% admittance rate), so I’m shocked that I didnt get into LA or SD. Honestly I probably woulda served a better chance at an ivy. Obviously im not going to SB,but future applicants, understand that UC’s care only about GPA. Screw course rigor (im serious, taking hard classes doesnt help with admissions at all) , screw EC’s, heck as long as you’re above a 2100 screw SAT’s too if you can get a 4.0.

Even at sb i got my second choice major, so im peeved.

Today I see that my son was not accepted into SB and I can not tell you how upset I am right now. He applied at 8 schools and the only 2 school that he has gotten into is CSUF and NAU. we are still waiting on UCI and USD, but it is looking bleak.

Am I out of line thinking that he should have got accepted somewhere besided NAU and CSUF? We applied to the following:
UCI - still waiting
USD - still waiting
NAU - accepted
CSUF - accepted
SDSU - not accepted
UCSD - not accepted
Cal poly SLO - not accepted
Cal Poly Pomona - not accepted

his stats
Sat: 1910 (math 670, reading and writing both 620)
ACT: 29
SAT 2: Math 2:690 Science:730 History:570
GPA: 3.31 (u) 3.6 (w)
3 AP test, with 3 more this year.

Many EC, many service hours.

I just don’t understand how he did not get in. The UCSB is the heartbreaker, as it was by far his #1 choice. Is see others with SAT lower than 1700 getting in.

My wife and I only went to jr college, so this entire process is an education in itself!!

Is it possible for him to goto CSUF for fall 2011 semester and then try to get into CSUB the following semester?

Thank you for anyone who can give me any info or advice.

@awesomesauceness: I don’t think they “only care about GPA”. My son got into UCSB Computer Science with a 3.65 UC GPA. His 2030 SAT and his awesome personal statement made up for the weak GPA.

@socaldad1 - The thing with UCs is that they take GPA into more consideration than anything else. It’s not the only thing they care about like awesomesauceness said, but it’s definitely the most important. And with an average GPA of 4.0, a 3.6 is fairly low. My GPA is really similar to your son’s and I got in. Maybe it’s because of my SAT I score, which is 180 points higher. Or maybe the admissions officer was feeling good that day and I got lucky. Then again, his SAT IIs and ECs are better than mine. I don’t know. UC decisions are weird every year. Even though your son didn’t get into his top choice, I hope he finds a school that he loves. Good luck!

btw, I definitely think he should have gotten into Pomona and SDSU. Maybe San Luis Obispo(depending on his major).
