@theleakers, thanks  have you decided 100% on UCSB? I’m thinking since a rejection from Cal and USC is imminent, UCSB is probably going to be my first choice haha

@awesomesauceness: I tend to agree with you. UCs give a great deal of weight to GPA, and it seems like you are almost penalized by going to a highly competitive high school where it’s difficult to get a very high GPA. I see it in the area where I live, there are low-performing high schools where you seem to get an A in honors classes with very little effort, compared to very competitive schools where it’s tough to get a B. Since they weight more heavily for GPA than SAT scores, you’re at a disadvantage even if you have high SATs. It’s hard to understand how some admits have significantly lower stats than some rejections. I know there’s more to the decision than scores, but it doesn’t really make sense.

accepted pre biology

2130 sat
4.05 gpa

waiting on davis and berkeley, but UCB will most likely reject me…so…DAVIS

accepted! not gonna post all my stats but 4.4 weighted gpa and 2020 sat, white female from san jose, california

also got into UCLA but will probably choose UCSB because its a much better fit for me!

congrats to everyone else:)

Decision: ACCEPTED :)

Program: COMPUTER SCIENCE

STATS:

SAT I (by section): M 750 CR 640 W 770 (2160)

SAT IIs: m2 790 Ushistory 680

APs/IBs: Psych (5) Stats (4) US history (4)

CAN I GET INTO DAVIS?!?!?!?

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE ELSE OUT THERE and remember college doesn’t make your future. YOU MAKE YOUR FUTURE SO DON’T BE SAD BE GLAD AND KEEP UR HEAD UP :)

@crabbie, congrats on getting in! I have slightly higher stats and was waitlisted for the same major :/

Hey Lauren! Sorry to hear you were waitlisted…although I hear a lot of waitlisted students get in to UCSB in the end  best of luck to you

@awesomesauceness That’s not how it is, there is a matrix which the UC’s use to determine you’re “uc score” which you receive points for many things including GPA, EC’s, SATs and ACTs, even race.

The score the matrix spits out then is used with your personal statement to determine your fit with the school.

GPA and SATs/ACTs are factored in just as much, with degrees like engineering you are competing with a number of students to get that seat. If you got your second choice, its because others beat you out for the spot not the school’s problem.

Decision: Accepted

Stats: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/12151479-post100.html

Comments: Good luck to everyone else! Although I have been accepted into UCSB, I don’t think I will be considering matriculating to UCSB. I’ve already been accepted into UCLA and UCSD, and am currently waiting on Berkeley and other Ivy Leagues.

Haha thanks. It just feels like one of those situations where you get so many denials that you start taking it personally, regardless if it is or not

[] State or country: So. Cal.
[] School type: Public (low-income)
[] Ethnicity: White
[li] Gender: Female[/li][/ul]**General comments/congratulations/venting,etc: ** My stats obviously aren’t the best, but I do rank higher than most at my school. I believe that’s the reason I got accepted. Nevertheless, I couldn’t be happier to have this opportunity. I know I will love UCSB!! :D

socaldad1 - I’m so sorry for your disappointment. I’ve got three kids (my youngest started at Cal this year) and I know how brutal admissions can be. The UC’s are extremely competitive and have gotten more competitive over the years. Although your son did well in school and is well rounded, his GPA is on the low side for UCSB. With a SAT score in his range, it would have helped his cause to have a higher GPA. With regards to Cal State schools, they are impacted as well. It has become much more competitive to get in to a state school these days. SDSU and Cal Poly SLO are tough and can be really tough depending on the major (engineering, psychology, etc.). I’m a little surprised about Cal State Pomona. I think that might have been a good match for him. Bottom line is anything can happen during this process. If he has his heart set on UCSB, I would have him go to a JC and try to transfer. Tell him to work really hard at the JC to get the best grades possible. Have him meet with an advisor to find out exactly which classes to take. He can still go to his dream school. He just needs to take a different path to get there. Many students do it. It’s a wonderful option and you get to save some money. Hang in there and good luck!

Accepted!

Female
SAT I: 1880
SAT II: 570 US History, 590 Math II
UC GPA: 3.5
Music major, wrote main essay about saxophone/jazz

I was happily surprised to see my acceptance at UCSB today! I was actually denied from the University of Washington (I live in WA). Public universities must be accepting a lot more OOS. Also, I used the exact same UC essays for UW and UW might have noticed that. I also got into UCSC, the only other UC which I applied to.
