Congrats to everyone that got accepted to amazing colleges!

@Calmomofthree I agree, I had high stats like @cdanny but did not get in. The engineering majors this year are very difficult (I applied for electrical engineering).

Im really suprised i was accepted can someone explain how I was with a 3.5 UW a 3.7 UC and a 30 on my ACT?

What major? Probably not engineering?

My major was undecided college of letters and sciences. I got accpeted to Cal poly SLO but rejected from UCD

@sudsmom… Thanks, but unfortunately he has been rejected by UCD and wait listed at UCSD. And in response to the person who said he probably had a poor me I’m a white boy essay, no he did not because he doesn’t think that way. And he has had plenty of hardships with his father in the middle east fighting for this country for most of his life. So much for gratitude towards veterans in this country. I’m sorry but I am mad because my son worked hard to get rejected by all the UC’s he applied to. Got a personal call from one of the UC’s admissions offices today after I questioned their admissions process in public. He said perhaps my son was overlooked and I should submit an appeal. Right - overlooked! Do you know that admissions to international students has risen 54% since 2011. And out of state by almost 30%. So I know where my son’s spot went! I have paid taxes in this state for 25 years! And Asian (no offense but someone was incorrect in their stats) have the single highest percentage of acceptances at all of the UC’s. Look up the stats everyone, they are on the UC office of the President’s website.

Here I’ll make it easy for all you parents to look up: http://www.ucop.edu/news/studstaff.html</a></p>

@cdanny That’s because -statistically, not stereotypically- Asian Americans tend to have higher test scores. At affirmative action schools, applicants are categorized to compete against their own race, making admissions much tougher for them. However, since UCs don’t practice AA, these top scoring applicants can get admitted easily for their own merit. Point is, affirmative action does not help Asian students; it’s only meant for Hispanics/African Americans/Native Americans. The student you mentioned must have had overcome some hardship & reflected resilience through amazing personal statements in order to be admitted with those stats. Sooo his acceptance was not due to “minority benefits.”

I think it is well known that there is a significant Asian student population at certain UC’s. This is not the case for all UC’s. I agree with @Lilliana330 regarding the stats. The information I previously provided was for UCSB only. Here is the link http://bap.ucsb.edu/IR/campusprofile/cp2012.pdf</a>. @cdanny Thank you for your service.

@Lilliana330… Well I would say from the personal call from the UC admission office after questioning this practice they are not supposed to be doing that maybe they are. It must have been one hell of a personal statement to get in with a 3.2 over a student with a 4.2 weighted gpa. Like I said, my son had hardships too. Sorry I just don’t buy it.

@cdanny Okay, so let’s say that they do practice affirmative action behind closed doors. What I’m trying to explain, though, is that AA doesn’t apply to Asian Americans. It must have been something else.

Wow maybe we could have an all white school? No wait I think that was tried in the past…perhaps not enough AP classes, or his essay or his interview or any number of things. I think you meant to say Asian American perhaps as many Asians can also be Americans and many asian Americans also serve their country. Your husband is a true hero as are all of our troops.

@TigerCC2014… Wow, so reverse discrimination is ok now? It should be based on performance. And there are no interviews at the UC’s. And the UCSB stats posted are not what the UC Office of the President is putting out. http://www.ucop.edu/news/factsheets/2013/fall_2013_admissions_table3.pdf</a> Scroll down to Santa Barbara. This is what I’m talking about - where is the truth - all different stories. And Asian Americans are NOT discriminated against. Believe me I work at UC Berkeley! And a large number of the Asian population there are NOT Americans!

I think it’s a big jump to call it discrimination. Wouldn’t it be appropriate to ask why he was rejected? Also isn’t also possible that a percentage of internationals may be full pay students? In that case it’s not race it’s dollars. I guess that’s why I try and avoid comparing myself to CC stats you can’t tell, what the applicant looks like just from numbers.

@cdanny clearly your son had high enough stats and should of been accepted into multiple UC’s. I hope you will call each school and speak to them. You can appeal and I bet in your sons case you would get action.
It’s just crazy that he was not admitted!

@TigerCC2014… Yes I do think it is dollars to the largest extent. But doesn’t it make you a little mad that international student acceptance has gone up by 54% in the past three years when you are paying taxes in this state, living here, your kid is in the top 9% and can’t get into a UC? The only thing I can come up with is that he is an in state student. He was nominated as the school valedictorian last week. Doesn’t something seem wrong with this picture? The Director of Admission that called me couldn’t tell me why and asked my son to appeal. Said maybe they calculated his gpa wrong or something was overlooked. Who knows.

@Sudsmom… Thanks, appreciate the support. I feel this is a fruitless task appealing, but am a little more optimistic after the phone call.

Yes it seems very odd based on his stats and honestly there may have been an error. As for the rise in internationals I think you also have to look at the fact that many do pay full or close to it which provides funding for other domestic students. The schools struggle to keep up with the money so sometimes it’s a money grab I guess. I’d appeal based on his qualifications.
