For all CCS CS applicants out there. Did anybody else get a surprise admission to Letters and Sciences today, while expecting news about college of engineering?
Found some info that leads me to believe that all CCS students are first admitted to Letters and Sciences regardless of where major resides:
http://admissions.sa.ucsb.edu/apply/freshman/selection
Excerpt:
College of Creative Studies
Applicants to the College of Creative Studies submit a supplementary application in addition to the general UC Application, which is reviewed by Creative Studies faculty. Students are selected within Creative Studies majors only. Applicants not selected for Creative Studies will automatically be considered for admission to the College of Letters and Science.
This may make sense for all other CCS majors since they match majors under Letters and Sciences. But that means that CS applicants are NOT considered for the CS major in the school of engineering if not selected for CCS.
Anybody can confirm this?
Doesn’t this take spots away from those who directly applied to the College of Letters and Sciences? Seems to be so

Congrats to all those who were accepted. And to those who were not, please do not despair or get down on yourself. My son went through this same process last year and so much of it is out of your control and unpredictable.
For those interested, my son was accepted into the CS program (COE). I don’t recall his exact stats, but I believe he had a 4.28 (UC GPA), 3.85 (U/W), 35 ACT and a 8+ AP scores (5s or 4s). He was accepted in UCD, UCSC, UCI, CalPoly, UMich, Purdue, UWash and Northeastern - all for CS; waitlisted at UCSD and rejected by UCB and UCLA.
He decided on UCSB (being mindful of the OOS tuition for UMich and the cold East Coast weather) and I believe he is generally happy with his decision. The CS program at UCSB is small compared to the other UCs - at the orientation, they informed us that there were approx. 100 incoming freshman in the program. Both him and his CS classmate agree that the small number really benefits the students because it is easier to get the attention of the professors / TA and to stand out. He has experienced some frustration getting some of the GE classes to fit within the schedule he wanted, but he hasn’t complained too much.
At the end of Fall quarter, he applied to CCS for Computing Science and was accepted for Winter quarter He has transferred into CCS and seems much happier because of the upper division courses that are available to him including those in his area of interest - cybersecurity. Before he could make the transfer, he had to sign a form agreeing that he was giving up his CS spot in COE and that he could not apply to return to COE. Because employers are more interested in what you know and learn (vs just looking at the school or degree), he believes that is why being in CCS is better and gives him an advantage over other CS majors in COE (because he is able to take more CS classes). He is working much harder this quarter (ex. non CCS students are capped at 16 units; but he is now taking 21 units (after dropping one 4-unit class).

@justaskingtoo My Son was accepted to UCSB to College of Letters & Science for PHysics and the Honors Program; however, he applied to CCS for Physics. He was disappointed so he emailed the physics prof. who reached out to him suggesting he apply to CCS in the 1st place. The prof. emailed him back advising him that the CCS faculty loved my son’s application and recommended that he be admitted to CCS. The prof. said the CCS letters won’t be mailed out until next week! So hang in there, CCS may still be coming for you!
