What does it mean when a kid (who applied RD to UCSB) gets a call from a Physics prof inviting him to apply to their College of Creative Studies in Physics? Is it Regent-ish in that he’s essentially accepted to the school, if not CCS?

i got it too but i applied for biochemistry. i don't think it's anything because CCS has another application thing.

Seems like it must be something since they must have a total of only about 15 freshman admits for each specialty within the College. At least it almost surely has to be, like Regents at LA and B, an indication that you've been accepted by the University if not yet by the College.

Comments? Rumors? Snide remarks? A friend of a distant relative knew someone who applied, back in the 70's? Any insight or throughts would be appreciated. Even Google/groups is almost silent on the subject - probably not a dozen useful threads.

When I applied to UCSB CCS a few years ago I got the impression that CCS students were seen as being something special relative to other UCSB students. I suspect what happened in this student's case is that someone in the CCS physics faculty got their hands on the application (perhaps forwarded from the admissions office) and liked what he saw. If a professor from UCSB is calling up someone and asking him to apply, it's a sign that someone in the university is very interested.

As a side note, I want to mention that CCS is quite an opportunity for an undergrad. Now that I'm in a more rigid traditional (and impersonal) program, I wonder whether I would have liked CCS more. Best of luck to your friend on getting in--and best of wishes for choosing wisely after he does.

This topic is more fully discussed under the UCSB category.

I am a faculty member in the Chemistry and Biochemistry program in CCS at UCSB. The various disciplines in CCS handle recruiting top students in a variety of ways. The physics program traditionally does a lot of phone calls in January and February. There is a separate admissions process for the College of Creative Studies, which is why we try to contact students early. Getting a call or email from a faculty member does not mean one is automatically admitted to UCSB. The campus admissions office is still in the process of reading everyone's file.

If you have questions about the programs in CCS feel free to contact faculty in the program. We are all quite willing to help answer your questions.
