Who’s nervous? I know I am! What all are your majors? Who’s Tagging? GPA’s? IGETC’s done? Is UCSB your first choice or one of many? How are your personal statement and applications going in general?
Made this mostly to ease my own jitters but I hope it can help with yours too!
You know, I may end up applying to UCSB. I’m not quite sure. I was originally just going to apply to UCB, UCLA, and UCI, but I think it would be good to have alternate options, in case I don’t get into my first choice (Berkeley). I’ll consider it. Anyway:
Major: Philosophy
UC-Transferable GPA: 4.0
IGETC: complete after Spring
Prereq’s: not sure for SB - but 3/3 completed by the end of Spring for UCB (I took one of the three at Cal), 3/4 for UCLA (the 4th isn’t offered anywhere), and I’m not sure about the others, but I completed all that was available to me.
EC’s: good. two major-related EC’s.
PS: working on it, but it should be good. I don’t think UCSB reads the personal statement.
TAG: UCI
I hear they don’t read them either! You’ll totally get in to your other choices though! Especially as a transfer! Good luck
Thank you. Good luck to you as well.
The UCSB Philosophy program obviously wouldn’t have the prestige of UCLA or UCB, but the program seems to offer more variety than I’ve seen at many other programs. I don’t foresee myself studying philosophy long term, but UCSB offers an Ethics and Public Policy concentration that I was drawn to, which is why it will be my double major if I attend there next fall. Of the top UCs I would argue that UCSB offers some of the most variety when it comes to fulfilling major requirements so it has its appeal.
Anyway, I am planning on applying Philosophy and adding History of Public Policy. I’ll probably post my update stats next spring.
@thevisionary Philosophy and History of Public Policy sounds like a great combo.
Major: History
UC-Transferable GPA: 3.5
TAG: Yes, to UCSB.
IGETC: Complete after this fall
Prereq’s: I believe for SB I’ll have most done by winter except one which isn’t offered at my ccc.
EC’s: eh, I work two jobs which equal like 40 hours a week so really no time for other EC’s. I’m a writing tutor and a manager at a pizza place. I previously volunteered at an elementary school last year though.
PS: still working on it and to be honest, I’m a bit unsure about how good it will be.
UCSB is one of my top choice schools along with UCLA and UCD so I’m really hoping it’ll work out, but since I tagged there I should get in…
@TheVisionary It’s nice to see another one of us
Major: Psychology
GPA: 3.9 (hopefully higher after this quarter ends)
TAG: UCSB
IGETC: completed
Prereq’s: I should have most of them complete for all schools I am applying to except for one class for UCSB
ECs: This is the portion where I am lacking. The only EC I have is working as a tutor ( I have been here for over 2 years) and I recently started volunteering at Red Cross
PS: I am pretty confident in the one regarding my major but the second prompt is another story. I am still working on them
UCSB and UCLA are my top schools
Major: Anthropology
GPA: 4.0 (looks like it will stay like that by the end of this semester)
TAG: No
IGETC: It will be completed by the end of spring
Prereq’s: 3/4, the fourth being statistics, but I passed AP stats with a 4
ECs: Not the most extensive list: Intern at land development firm, 2 years of high school soccer, more soccer outside of high school soccer, surfing, guitar,
Awards: I have a pretty good non-academic award from highs school regarding character (if that matters lol)
Catch: The catch is that i’m a one year transfer. I was able to do this because I have credit from 5 AP exams (4 fours and 1 three). In the summer I took 13.5 semester units, and i’m taking 19 in the fall right know. My concern is that I do not have enough classes with earned grades to show. When I submit my app I will only have summer grades (5 classes), but we do send a midterm report with fall grades correct? (6 classes). And if it matters i’m taking 14 units in the spring (4 classes).
UCSB is number one for me with UCLA number two, if any of you have heard anything about one year transfers’ success rates it would be appreciated if you share that with me. I applied last year as a senior in high school, and I can tell you it is a long wait until march/april. Good luck everyone!
Major: Psychology
UC-Transferable GPA: 3.4 (Apparently the UC transcript doesn’t erase grades from forever ago that you’ve since retaken.)
IGETC: Done
Prereq’s: Done by the end of spring, except for the calculus requirement, which will be finished by the end of summer.
EC’s: Great, in my opinion. One major-related internship, president of Alpha Gamma Sigma and Phi Theta Kappa, member of Active Minds, student ambassador, and previous tutoring experience.
PS: 9/10. I worked really hard on it and had someone at Berkeley fix it. I would give it a 10, but I don’t feel that confident.
TAG: UCSC. Denied because of the fact that I didn’t have enough major-prep courses done at the time of evaluation.
Berkeley is my first choice, but UCSB would do just as well. A lot of my friends are applying to UCSB, so I wouldn’t have to start completely over if we were all accepted.
Major: Psychology
UC GPA: 3.29
Prereq’s: will be done in spring
7 course pattern: COMPLETE AFTER THIS FALL
EC’s: very involved, hold 2 positions and a job
PS: working on it now!
TAG: I’m at another UC, so no tag for me!
does UCSB really not read personal statements as a transfer?
@goldencub Do you know what the philosophy program at UCSB is like?
@HughMirin I have no idea. Judging from their course list, it seems to be focused primarily on political philosophy/ethics, with logic/metaphysics/epistemology etc. added in, naturally, as most colleges focus on analytic thought.
UCI and UCSC focus a good bit on continental philosophy, apparently.
@UCMtoUCSBHopeful
UCSB is known for not reading personal statements. Though, I have heard of cases where students were on the cusp of being admitted and their personal statement is what solidified their admission.
Major: Psychology
UC GPA: 3.7
TAG: UCSB
IGETC: Will be completed after spring
Prereq’s: Almost all done, completing 2 this spring
EC’s: Not many past high school, have a part-time job, and have random community involvement
UCSB is my top choice
@yungdolphin You’ll definitely get in.
@andom111 would you say this is also applicable to intercampus UC transfers?
http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/quick-reference-2015.pdf
pg 36 if anyone wants confirmation regarding which UCs read personal statements
Major: Psychology
GPA: 3.47
TAG: UCSB
IGETC: complete
Prereq’s: complete
ECs: not much, I’ve been working at a food place for the past two years and I help my local church occasionally
PS: My first one is alright but i feel more confident in my second one. But my top choice which is UCSB doesn’t look at personal statements soooooo…
